Abstract
251,690. Tisdale, H. W., Hoskins, B. D. W., Firman, H., Bridges, F., and Codling, W. R. Feb. 5, 1925. Rotary machines. - The edges of bound books or blocks are printed on by a machine through which the books are passed in succession in two movements more or less at rightangles to each other. The book is placed in a vertical condition with its bound edge resting on an adjustable support 18<a>, and is carried by spaced rods on chains 9, 14 driven by bevel gearing 5, 6 towards a printing-roller 19. The covers of the book are controlled by spaced guides 16, 17, which converge su as to press the edges of the book together while being printed on by the roller 18. As the printed book leaves the guides 16, 17 it is acted on by a rotating pusher-arm 31 and passes on to a second runway 28 at right-angles to the first. It is turned through 90‹ and rests on one cover as it is propelled by push-rods 34 carried by chains 29, 30. The book is then carried past one or two vertical printing-rollers 35, 36 for printing on one or both of the remaining edges of the book, the roller 36 being laterally adjustable for dealing with books of different sizes. To maintain the drive of the roller 36 in all lateral positions it is driven by an idler gear at the joint of hinged links 46, 47. While the second printing takes place the top cover is pressed by rollers 40 on spring-pressed arms 39 so that the edges form a, solid face to receive the impression. The printed book is finally delivered by highspeed belts 41 which advance it relatively to the rods 34, so as to enable the chains 29, 30 to pass over their pulleys without interference between the rods 36 and the books. The books may be printed in several colours by providing more than one roller 19 &c. Tripping-arrangements; impression adjustments. - The printing-roller 19 and its inking- rollers are carried by a frame pivoted to the shaft 7 and the position of the roller is controlled by a set-screw, or set-screws, mounted in fixed arms on the main frame of the machine, against which the gravity-controlled frame rests. A feeler device 42 acts to stop the machine electrically if the book is fed the wrong way up, and trip levers 37 act in conjunction with the second printing-couple to trip the machine if the pages of the book are not flat. 'The drivers 37, 42 act to control switches of electrically-operated trip devices. Printing-surfaces.-The type is preferably cut in a rubber strip 50 vulcanized on a leather band 51 secured by screwed plates 52, 53 in a V-shaped recess in the roller. The part 43 of the roller 9 carrying the band 51 is raised so as to permit the passage of the boards or other backing of the book, which have slightly larger height than the pages of the book.
