Abstract
A child car seat comprising a base part 24 and a backrest part 26. The backrest 26 is pivotably connected to the base 24 which may be by a four-joint linkage 28 with lever arms 30, 32. The backrest 26 pivots from a first position (fig 2) where the seat is facing forwards as a toddler seat to a second position (fig 3) where the seat is facing rearwards as an infant carrier. The arms 30, 32 of the four-joint linkage 28 can be crossed so that as the backrest 26 hinges over the base 24 an upper joining point of one arm with the backrest becomes a lower joining point with the backrest (the backrest turns upside-down). A seat support device 48 has a slot 54 in its base plate 52 and side slots 58 along which a supporting rod 60 slides relative to the base plate 52. A spring-loaded handle (fig 8, 64) actuates the supporting rods movement. The child seat has a five point harness with seat belts (fig 7, 66) which can slide along slots (fig 7, 76) in the base part 24 allowing the same belts to be used for both forward and backward facing positions.
Description
Convertible Child Car Seat The invention relates to a car seat for a vehicle which is convertible between a rear-facing infant carrier and a forward-facing toddler carrier.
US 7 901 003 Bi shows a car seat for transporting a child in an automobile, the car seat being convertible from a rear-facing infant carrier into an forward-facing toddler carrier by the inclusion or removal of a separable head rest. The car seat features a belt adjustment system as well as a crotch belt adjustment system in addition to front and rear restraint attachment components.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a car seat for a vehicle, which car seat can be converted between a rear-facing infant carrier and a forward-facing toddler carrier particularly easily and comfortably.
This object is solved by a car seat having the features of patent claim 1. Advantageous embodiments with expedient and non-trivial developments of the invention are indicated in the other patent claims.
The invention relates to a car seat for a vehicle, the car seat being convertible between a rear-facing infant carrier and a forward-facing toddler carrier. The car seat comprises a base part having a first surface forming a first portion of a seat back surface for the forward-facing toddler carrier. The base part has a second surface extending angularly in relation to the first surface. The second surface forms a seating surface for the forward-facing toddler carrier and the rear-facing infant carrier.
Furthermore, the car seat comprises a backrest part being pivotably held on the base part. The backrest part is configured to be pivoted between a first position forming the forward-facing toddler carrier and a second position forming the rear-facing infant carrier.
The backrest part has a third surface which forms a second portion of the seat back surface for the forward-facing toddler carrier in the first position of the backrest part.
Moreover, the third surface adjoins the first surface in the first position of the backrest part. Furthermore, the third surface forms a seat back surface for the rear-facing infant carrier in the second position of the backrest part. The third surface adjoins the second surface in the second position of the backrest part.
This means the backrest part is a multi-purpose part which can be pivoted in relation to the base part while the backrest part is held on the base part. Thus, the car seat according to the present invention can be converted between the forward-facing toddler carrier and the rear-facing infant carrier particularly easily and comfortably without detaching the backrest part from the base part. The third surface of the backrest part can be used at least as a portion of a seat back surface both in the first position and in the second position of the backrest part. Hence, the number of parts, the weight, and the cost of the car seat according to the present invention can be kept particularly low.
In a particularly advantageous embodiment of the invention, the car seat comprises a seat belt system having at least one base element. The base part is attached to the base element. The seat belt system further comprises at least one supporting element movably held on the base element. Additionally, the seat belt system comprises at least one guide along which the supporting element can be slid. The seat belt system further comprises at least one seat belt supported on the supporting element. The supporting element and the seat belt are configured to be slid along the guide between at least one third position for the forward-facing toddler carrier and at least one fourth position for the rear-facing infant carrier. Thereby, the seat belt system can be used for both the forward-facing toddler carrier and the rear-facing infant carrier and can be adapted to the respective carriers in a particularly easy and comfortable way.
Preferably, the base part comprises at least one slot, the seat belt being slidable along the slot when sliding the supporting element along the guide. Hence, the seat belt can be guided along the slot when the seat belt system is adapted to the respective carrier.
Further advantages, features, and details of the invention derive from the following description of a preferred embodiment as well as from the drawings. The features and feature combinations previously mentioned in the description as well as the features and feature combinations mentioned in the following description of the figures and/or shown in the figures alone can be employed not only in the respective indicated combination but also in any other combination or taken alone without leaving the scope of the invention.
The drawings show in: Fig. 1 a schematic perspective view of a car seat for a vehicle, the car seat being convertible between a rear-facing infant carrier and a forward-facing toddler carrier, the car seat comprising a base part and a backrest part pivotably held on the base part between at least two different positions; Fig. 2 a schematic side view of the car seat forming the forward-lacing toddler carrier; Fig. 3 a schematic side view of the car seat forming the rear-facing infant carrier; Fig. 4 a schematic front view of the car seat according to Fig. 2; Fig. 5 a schematic top view of the car seat according to Fig. 4; Fig. 6 a schematic front view of the car seat according to Fig. 3; Fig. 7 a schematic top view of the car seat according to Fig. 6; Fig. 8 a schematic exploded view of a support device of the car seat; Fig. 9 a schematic perspective view of the support device according to Fig. 8; Fig. 10 part of a schematic perspective view of the car seat forming the forward-facing toddler carrier; Fig. 11 a schematic perspective view of the support device; Fig. 12 a schematic perspective view of the car seat forming the rear-facing infant carrier; Fig. 13 a schematic perspective view of the support device; Fig. 14 part of a schematic side view of the car seat forming the forward-facing toddler carrier; Fig. 15 part of a schematic side view of the car seat forming the rear-facing infant carrier; Fig. 16 a schematic side view of the support device; and Fig. 17 a schematic side view of the support device.
In the figures the same elements or elements having the same functions are designated with the same reference signs.
Fig. 1 shows a car seat 10 for a vehicle, in particular a passenger vehicle. The car seat 10 is convertible between a rear-facing infant carrier shown in Figs. 3, 6, 7, 12 and 15 and a forward-facing toddler carrier shown in Fig. 1.2,4,5. 10 and 14. For example, the rear-facing infant carrier is suitable for infants between 0-13 kg. The forward-facing toddler carrier is suitable for children or toddlers between, for example, 9-18 kg.
The car seat 10 comprises a base part 12 having a first surface 14 (Fig. 4) and a second surface 16 (Fig. 5). The first surface 14 forms a first portion 18 of a seat back surface 20 for the forward-facing toddler carrier. The second surface 16 forms a seating surface 22 for the forward-facing toddler carrier and the rear-facing infant carrier. This means the seating surface 22 is configured to support legs of a child sitting in the car seat 10. The second surface 16 extends angularly in relation to the first surface 14. For example, the second surface 16 extends at least substantially perpendicularly to the first surface 14.
The base part 12 has raised sides 24 which can support the child in the transverse direction of the vehicle.
The car seat 10 further comprises a backrest part 26. The backrest part 26 is pivotably held on the base part 12 by lateral four-joint linkages 28. One of said four-joint linkages 28 can be seen in Figs. 2 and 3. The respective four-joint linkage 28 comprises two lever arms 30, 32 which are pivotably connected to the backrest part 26 on one side and the base part 12 on the other side. This means the lever arms 30, 32 can be pivoted about respective pivot axis in relation to the base part 12 and the backrest part 26.
Thereby, the backrest part 26 can be pivoted in relation to the base part 12 between a first position and a second position. The first position forms the forward-facing toddler carrier and the second position forms the rear-facing infant carrier. In other words, the car seat 10 is configured as the forward-facing toddler carrier in the first position of the backrest part 26. Moreover, the car seat 10 is configured as the rear-facing infant carrier in the second position of the backrest part 26. The backrest part 26 has raised sides 34 configured to support the head of the child sitting in the car seat 10.
As can be seen, for example, in Figs. 4 and 7, the backrest part 26 has a third surface 36 which forms a second portion 38 of the seal back surface 20 for the forward-facing toddler carrier in the first position of the backrest part 26. The third surface 36 adjoins the first surface 14 in the first position of the backrest pad 26.
However, in the second position of the backrest part 26, the third surface 36 forms a seat back surface 40 for the rear-facing infant carrier. Moreover, the third surface 36 adjoins the second surface 16 in the second position of the backrest part 26. Hence, the backrest part 26 is configured as a multi-purpose part which can be pivoted between the first position and the second position particularly easily and comfortably by a user. Thus, the car seat 10 can be switched from the forward-facing toddler carrier to the rear-facing infant carrier and vice versa in a particularly easy and comfortable way without detaching the backrest part 26 from the base part 12.
As can be seen from Figs. 2 and 3, the car seat 10 comprises respective locking means 42 and 44. The locking means 42 is configured to fix the backrest part 26 in the first position in relation to the base part 12. For example, the locking means 42 is configured as a latch mechanism and comprises at least one latch.
The locking means 44 is configured to fix or hold the backrest part 26 in the second position in relation to the base part 12. For example, the locking means 44 is configured as a latch mechanism comprising at least one latch.
The car seat 10 further comprises at least one fixing element 46 configured to be attached to a corresponding further fixing element of an ISOFIX attachment system. For example, the further fixing element is mounted on a seat of the vehicle so that the car seat 10 can be attached to the seat in a very easy and comfortable way by means of the ISOFIX attachment system.
The car seat 10 further comprises a support device 48 shown in Figs. 1, 8, 9 11, 13, 16 and 17. The support device 48 is part of a seat belt system 50 of the car seat 10. The support device 48 and, thus, the seat belt system 50 comprises a base element in the form of a base plate 52. The base plate 52 has a guide in the form of a slot 54. Moreover, the support device 48 comprises lateral guide brackets 56 each having a guide in the form of a lateral slot 58.
The support device 48 further comprises a supporting element 60 movably held on the base plate 52 by a mounting bracket 62.The mounting bracket 62 engages the slot 54 and the supporting element 60 engages the slots 58 respectively. Thus, the supporting element 60 and the mounting bracket 62 can be slid along the slots 54 and 58 in relation to the base plate 52, the base part 12 and the backrest pad 26. The base part 12 is attached to the support device 48, in particular the base plate 52. The support device 48 further comprises a handle 64 by means of which the supporting element 60 can be actuated and, thus, slid along the slots 58.
The seat belt system 50 further comprises seat belts 66, wherein the seat belt system 50 is configured as a five-point harness. As can be seen from Figs. 16 and 17, one respective end 68 of the respective seat belt 66 is fixed in relation to the base plate 52.
Moreover, the respective seat belt 66 is supported on the supporting element 60.
Thereby, the respective seat belt 66 is routed by the supporting element 60. The supporting element 60 can be slid along the slots 58 between a third position shown in Figs. 1, 9, 10, 11 and 16 and at least one fourth position shown in Figs. 12, 13 and 17 thereby moving the seat belts 66 between the third position and the fourth position.
As can be seen from Figs. 11 and 13, respective brackets 70, 72 are attached to an underside 74 of the base plate 52. The supporting element 60 and, thus, the seat belts 66 can be held in the third position by means of the brackets 72 in relation to the base plate 52. Moreover, the supporting element 60 and, thus, the seat belts 66 can be held in the fourth position by means of the brackets 70 in relation to the base plate 52.
The supporting element 60 and the seat belts 66 are to be slid into the third position for the forward-facing toddler carrier. Moreover, the supporting element 60 and the seat belts 66 are to be slid in the fourth position for the rear-facing infant carrier. Thus, the seat belt system 50, in particular the seat belts 66 can be adapted to the respective carriers in a particularly easy and comfortable way.
As can be seen in Fig. 5, the base part 12 has lateral slots 76 through which the respective seat belts 66 are routed. By sliding the supporting element 60 between the fourth position and the third position along the slots 58, the seat belts 66 are slid along the slots 76. Thus, the seat belts 66 can be used for both, the forward-facing toddler carrier and the rear-facing infant carrier.
For the rear-facing infant carrier, the supporting element 60 and, thus, the seat belts 66 are slid along the slots 58 in a foremost position. For the forward-facing toddler carrier, the supporting element 60 and, thus, the seat belts are slid along the slots 58 in a rear-most position.
The support device 48 comprises indicator elements 78 in the form of colour code indication brackets configured to indicate that the supporting element 60 and the seat belts 66 are locked in the third position or in the fourth position properly. If the supporting element 60 is locked properly, the colour of the respective indicator element 78 turns from red to green.
For example, the handle 64 is spring loaded to lock the supporting element 60 in the third position and the fourth position properly. In order to move the supporting element 60 from the third position into the fourth position or vice versa, the handle 64 acting as a release handle is to be rotated about an axis 80 (Figs. 11 and 13). Then, the handle 64 and the supporting element 60 can be slid along the slots 58 in order to shift the position of the seat belts 66.
As can be seen from Fig. 10, the release handle 64 can be accessed from the bottom of the car seat 10 in order to shift the position of the seat belt 66. When the supporting element 60 has reached the desired position, the release handle 64 is released so that the supporting element 60 and, thus, the seat belts 66 are locked in the desired position in relation to the base plate 52, the base part 12, and the backrest part 26. For example, the handle 64 is connected to the mounting bracket 62 so that the supporting element 60 can be locked to the base plate 52 in the third position and the fourth position via the handle 64 and the mounting bracket 62 by means of at least one spring.
