Abstract

A child car seat comprising a base part 12, a backrest part 26 and a four-joint linkage 28. The four-joint linkage 28 has lever arms 30, 32 which pivotably connect the base 12 and backrest 26. The backrest 26 pivots from a first position (fig 3) where the seat is facing forwards as a toddler seat to a second position (fig 4) where the seat is facing rearwards as an infant carrier. The arms 30, 32 of the four-joint linkage 28 can be crossed so that as the backrest 26 hinges over the base 12 an upper joining point of one arm with the backrest becomes a lower joining point with the backrest (the backrest turns upside-down).

Description

Convertible Child Car Seat The invention relates to a car seat for a vehicle which is convertible between a rear-facing infant carrier and a forward-facing toddler carrier.
US 7 901 003 Bi shows a car seat for transporting a child in an automobile, the car seat being convertible from a rear-facing infant carrier into an forward-facing toddler carrier by the inclusion or removal of a separable head rest. The car seat features a belt adjustment system as well as a crotch belt adjustment system in addition to front and rear restraint attachment components.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a car seat for a vehicle, which car seat can be converted between a rear-facing infant carrier and a forward-facing toddler carrier particularly easily and comfortably.
This object is solved by a car seat having the features of patent claim 1. Advantageous embodiments with expedient and non-trivial developments of the invention are indicated in the other patent claims.
The invention relates to a car seat for a vehicle, the car seat being convertible between a rear-facing infant carrier and a forward-facing toddler carrier. The car seat comprises a base part having a first surface forming a first portion of a seat back surface for the forward-facing toddler carrier. The base part has a second surface extending angularly in relation to the first surface. The second surface forms a seating surface for the forward-facing toddler carrier and the rear-facing infant carrier.
Furthermore, the car seat comprises a backrest part being pivotably held on the base part by at least one four-joint linkage. The backrest part is configured to be pivoted between a first position forming the forward-facing toddler carrier and a second position forming the rear-facing infant carrier.
The backrest part has a third surface which forms a second portion of the seat back surface for the forward-facing toddler carrier in the first position of the backrest pad.
Moreover, the third surface adjoins the first surface in the first position of the backrest part. Furthermore, the third surface forms a seat back surface for the rear-facing infant carrier in the second position of the backrest part. The third surface adjoins the second surface in the second position of the backrest part.
This moans the backrest part is a multi-purpose part which can be pivoted in relation to the base part while the backrest part is held on the base part. Thus, the car seat according to the present invention can be converted between the forward-facing toddler carrier and the rear-facing infant carrier particularly easily and comfortably without detaching the backrest part from the base part. The third surface of the backrest part can be used at least as a portion of a seat back surface both in the first position and in the second position of the backrest part. Hence, the number of parts, the weight, and the cost of the car seat according to the present invention can be kept particularly low. Moreover, a particularly advantageous and space-saving movement of the backrest part in relation to the base part can be realized by means of the four-joint linkage.
Preferably, the backrest part is pivotably held on the base part by two lateral four-joint linkages. Thus, a very high stability of the car seat can be realized. For example, the four-joint linkage comprises at least two lever arms which are pivotably connected to the base part and the backrest part respectively.
Further advantages, features, and details of the invention derive from the following description of a preferred embodiment as well as from the drawings. The features and feature combinations previously mentioned in the description as well as the features and feature combinations mentioned in the following description of the figures and/or shown in the figures alone can be employed not only in the respective indicated combination but also in any other combination or taken alone without leaving the scope of the invention.
The drawings show in: Fig. 1 a schematic perspective view of a car seat for a vehicle, the car seat being convertible between a rear-facing infant carrier and a forward-facing toddler carrier, the car seat comprising a base part and a backrest part pivotably held on the base part between at least two different positions; Fig. 2 a schematic and perspective back view of the car seat; Fig. 3 a schematic side view of the car seat forming the forward-facing toddler carrier; Fig. 4 a schematic side view of the car seat forming the rear-facing infant carrier; Fig. 5 a schematic side view of the car seat, wherein motion paths of lever arms of a four-joint linkage are shown; Fig. 6 a schematic perspective view of the car seat forming the forward-facing toddler carrier; and Fig. 7 a schematic perspective view of the car seat forming the rear-facing infant carrier.
In the figures the same elements or elements having the same functions are designated with the same reference signs.
Fig. 1 shows a car seat 10 for a vehicle, in particular a passenger vehicle. The car seat 10 is a child car seat and convertible between a rear-facing infant carrier shown in Figs. 4 and 7 and a forward-facing toddler carrier shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 6. For example, the rear-facing infant carrier is suitable for infants between 0-13 kg. The forward-facing toddler carrier is suitable for children or toddlers between, for example, 9-18 kg.
The car seat 10 comprises a base part 12 having a first surface 14 and a second surface 16. The first surface 14 forms a first portion 18 of a seat back surface 20 for the forward-facing toddler carrier. The second surface 16 forms a seating surface 22 for the forward-facing toddler carrier and the rear-facing infant carrier. This means the seating surface 22 is configured to support legs of a child sitting in the car seat 10. The second surface 16 extends angularly in relation to the first surface 14. For example, the second surface 16 extends at least substantially perpendicularly to the first surface 14. The base part 12 has raised sides 24 which can support the child in the transverse direction of the vehicle and the car seat 10. The transverse direction is illustrated by a directional arrow 25.
The car seat 10 further comprises a base element 27 having two fixing elements 29 (Fig. 2) by means of which the car seat 10 can be attached to a seat 31 shown in Figs. 6 and 7. For example, the fixing elements 29 are parts of an ISOFIX attachment system by means of which the car seat 10 can be attached to and detached from the seat 31 in a particularly easy and comfortable way.
The car seat further comprises a backrest part 26. The backrest part 26 is pivotably held on the base part 12 by two lateral four-joint linkages 28. The respective four-joint linkage 28 comprises a first support link in the form of a first lever arm 30 and a second support link in the form of a second lever arm 32. The lever arms 30, 32 are pivotably connected to the backrest part 26 on one respective end and the base part 12 on the respective other end. This means the lever arms 30, 32 can be pivoted about respective pivot axes in relation to the base part 12 and the backrest part 26. Thereby, the backrest part 26 can be pivoted in relation to the backrest part 12 between a first position and a second position.
The first position forms the forward-facing toddler carrier and the second position forms the rear-facing infant carrier. In other words, the car seat 10 is configured as the forward-facing toddler carrier in the first position for the backrest part 26. Moreover, the car seat is configured as the rear-facing infant carrier in the second position of the backrest part 26. The backrest part 26 has raised sides 34 to support the head of the child sitting in the car seat 10.
The backrest part 26 has a third surface 36 which forms a second portion 38 of the seat back surface 20 for the forward-facing toddler carrier in the first position of the backrest part 26. The third surface 36 adjoins the first surface 14 in the first position of the backrest part 26.
However, in the second position of the backrest part 26, the third surface 36 forms a seat back surface 40 (Fig. 7) for the rear-facing infant carrier. Moreover, the third surface 36 adjoins the second surface 16 in the second position of the backrest part 26. Hence, the backrest part 26 is configured as a multi-purpose part which can be pivoted between the first position and the second position particularly easily and comfortably by a user. Thus, the car seat 10 can be switched from the forward-facing toddler carrier to the rear-facing infant carrier and vice versa in a particularly easy and comfortable way without detaching the backrest part 26 from the base part 12.
As can be seen from Figs. 3 and 4, the car seat 10 comprises respective locking means 42 and 44. The locking means 42 is configured to fix the backrest part 26 in the first position in relation to the base part 12. For example, the locking means 42 is configured as a latch mechanism and comprises at least one latch.
The locking means 44 is configured to fix or hold the backrest part 26 in the second position in relation to the base part 12. For example, the locking means 44 is configured as a latch mechanism comprising at least one latch. Furthermore, the car seat 10 comprises a seat belt system 46 which comprises at least two seat belts 48. The seat belt system is configured as a five-point harness.
As can be seen from Figs. 2 to 5, the first lever arm 30 is pivotably coupled to the backrest part 26 at a first point 50. Moreover, the first lever arm 30 is pivotably coupled to the base part 12 at a second point 52. The second lever arm 32 is coupled to the backrest part 26 at a third point 54. Moreover, the second lever arm 32 is coupled to the base part 12 at a fourth point 56. With respect to the first position, the first point 50 is arranged above the third point 54 in the vertical direction of the car seat 10. The vertical direction of the car seat 10 is illustrated by a directional arrow 58. With respect to the car seat 10 being attached to the seat 31 and, thus, arranged in an interior of the vehicle, the vertical direction of the car seat 10 corresponds with the vertical direction of the vehicle.
Moreover, the first point 50 is arranged in front of the third point 54 with respect to the longitudinal direction of the car seat 10. The longitudinal direction of the car seat 10 is illustrated by a directional arrow 60. With respect to the car seat 10 being attached to the seat 31, the longitudinal direction of the car seat 10 corresponds with the longitudinal direction of the vehicle.
With respect to the first position, the second point 52 is arranged behind the fourth point 56 in the longitudinal direction of the car seat 10. Moreover, the second point 52 is arranged above the fourth point 56 in the vertical direction of the car seat 10.
In Fig. 5, dashed lines 60, 62 illustrate respective motion paths of the lever arms 30, 32.
The motion path of the lever arm 30, in particular the first point 50, is illustrated by the dashed line 60. The motion path of the lever arm 32, in particular the third point 54, is illustrated by the dashed line 62. The car seat 10 allows for realizing a stable rear-facing infant carrier as well as a stable forward-toddler carrier in a particularly cost-and material-saving way. Moreover, the car seat 10 is particularly easy to handle.
