Description
HAIRDRESSER'S MASKING SHEET The present invention relates to hairdressers masking sheets and in particular concerns masking sheets of the type that are adapted to engage and mask selected strands of S hair while the selected strands are treated, for example, for bleaching era colouring.
A number of techniques are known that enable selected strands of hair to be treated and masked from unselected hair. For example, International patent application W02007/141544 discloses a hairdresser's masking sheet comprising a substrate of flexible material having an adhesive tape carried by the substrate for effecting attachment of the sheet to selected strands of a head of hair prior to treatment, and for rapid removal thereafter. The masking sheet comprises two rectangular panels, of substantially the same dimensions, which are joined together along a common edge to form a transversely extending hinge. The hinged joint enables the panels to be hinged apart to receive the selected strands of hair between the panels. The panels can then be brought into proximity with each other to envelop the selected strands so that the strands may undergo a treatment process within the envelope so formed.
In one known example, the masking sheet comprises a first panel of opaque flexible sheet material, for example polyester, and a second panel of substantially transparent flexible sheet material welded to the first along a common edge. The transparent panel allows the hairdresser to monitor the progress of the colouring/bleaching process.
Masking sheets are used with chemicals such as bleach, permanent dyes or tints.
The solution that is used to bleach hair contains alkali to soften the outer cuticle cells and hydrogen peroxide which acts as a developer. The released oxygen penetrates the softened outer layer of hair and reacts with the natural pigments in the cortex, oxidizing them and breaking them down.
The hair pigment goes through different stages of colour change as it lightens which enables the hair stylist to monitor the reaction. The amount of change depends on how much pigment the hair has and the length of time the hair is exposed to the lightening chemicals.
Colour can be added after bleaching. Permanent hair dyes are colourless monomers.
These molecules are small enough to pass between the cuticle cells and enter the cortex. They react with hydrogen peroxide and polymerise to become coloured molecules. They cluster and become too large to wash out of the hair, leaving hair permanently coloured. The colour of the pigments therefore changes as the dye molecules react with hydrogen peroxide.
Bleaching typically takes about 40 minutes to an hour and colouring up to about 40 minutes depending on the pigment, chemical concentration and temperature.
The decomposition of hydrogen peroxide is naturally exothermic, generating approximately 98KJ/mol. A typical 3% or 6% hydrogen peroxide solution with an ammonia base will heat a head of hair to about 320 initially, but this will decay gradually overtime once applied. Heat lamps are often found in hairdresser's salons to provide additional heat and maintain the temperature at which the bleaching/colouring process occurs in order to reduce the amount of time required for treating a head of hair. Such external heat sources are not usually practical.
There is a requirement therefore for a more convenient method of reducing the amount of time required to bleach or colour hair.
According to an aspect of the present invention there is provided a hairdressers masking sheet for masking selected strands of hair from other strands of hair while the selected strands are treated, the said masking sheet comprising at least two panels of flexible sheet material which are capable of being hinged apart to receive the selected strands and subsequently brought together to envelop the selected strands, at least one of the panels comprising a substrate of a flexible sheet material having a chemical reagent applied thereto which reacts with hair bleaching and/or colouring agent(s) to generate heat and thereby promote the bleaching/colouring process in use.
The above aspect of the present invention therefore contemplates embodiments where one or both panels of the masking sheet are coated, on the surface facing the other panel when closed, with a chemical reagent which reacts exothermically with the chemicals applied to the hair in bleaching and/or colouring processes. Suitable chemical reagents being readily know to those skilled in the art. Preferably the reaction provides for more stable temperature during the bleaching/colouring process, that is to say the reaction temperature does not decay over time or decay as quickly compared with known processes. In one embodiment the chemical reagent may react exothermically with water contained in the hydrogen peroxide solution or ammonia solution used in bleaching or colouring or with water added to activate such chemical reagent during the hair treatment process. The reagent may be printed as a film on the respective surface of the panel or panels According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a hairdressers S masking sheet for masking selected strands of hair from other strands of hair while the selected strands are treated, the said masking sheet comprising at least Iwo panels of flexible sheet material which are capable of being hinged apart to receive the selected strands and subsequently brought together to envelop the selected strands, at least one of the panels comprising a substrate of a flexible sheet material having a chemical reagent applied thereto, and/or a separate sheet between the said panels which additionally or alternatively has a chemical reagent, which reagent(s) react with hair bleaching and/or colouring agent(s) to generate heat and thereby promote the bleaching/colouring process in use.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a hairdressers masking sheet for masking selected strands of hair from other strands of hair while the selected strands are treated, the said masking sheet comprising at least two panels of flexible sheet material which are capable of being hinged apart to receive the selected strands and subsequently brought together to envelop the selected strands, the said panels comprising a substrate of a flexible sheet material each having a chemical reagent applied thereto, a first reagent being applied to a first of the panels and a second reagent being applied to a second of the panels which reacts with the first reagent to generate heat and thereby promote the bleaching/colouring process in use. This aspect of the invention shares contemplates embodiments where both sheets, front and rear, are provided with different chemical reagents which react exothermically with each other. In such an embodiment a sheet of release material may be provided to separate the adjacent surfaces of the panels before use.
Alternatively the chemical reagents could be selected so that they are inert when in contact with each other and activated by a water or a water based solution or hair treatment chemical in use.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a hairdressers masking sheet for masking selected strands of hair from other strands of hair while the selected strands are treated, the said masking sheet comprising at least two panels of flexible sheet material which are capable of being hinged apart to receive the selected strands and subsequently brought together to envelop the selected strands, at least one of the panels comprising a substrate of a flexible sheet material having a catalyst applied thereto to promote the bleaching/colouring process in use. Other embodiments thus contemplate the use of a catalyst to speed up the chemical reaction(s) of hair bleaching/colouring. Appropriate catalysts being well known to those skilled in the art.
S According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a hairdressers masking sheet for masking selected strands of hair from other strands of hair while the selected strands are treated, the said masking sheet comprising at least two panels of flexible sheet material which are capable of being hinged apart to receive the selected strands and subsequently brought together to envelop the selected strands, at least one of the panels comprising a substrate of a flexible sheet material having an electrically conductive film applied thereto for induction heating of the said panel for heat transfer, in use, to bleaching and/or colouring agent(s) within the said sheet, thereby to promote the bleaching/colouring process. This aspect of the invention contemplates the use of induction heating to heat the masking sheets immediately prior to use so that heat may be transferred, in use, to the active chemicals used in hair bleaching/colouring. For example, a ferrous film may be applied to one or both panels of the making sheet to provide for induction heating of the panel(s).
Various embodiments of the present invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a hairdresser's masking sheet, according to an embodiment of one aspect of the invention, with the panels of the sheet unfolded and lying adjacent to one another in readiness for use; Figure 2 is a side view of the masking sheet of Figure 1 with the panels of the sheet overlying one another; Figure 3 is a perspective view of the masking sheet of Figures 1 and 2 with the panels of the sheet partially open; Figure 4 is a perspective view of a masking aid similar to that shown in Figure 3 having an additional, or intermediate, panel between the front and rear panels; Referring now to Figures 1 to 4, there is shown a haidresser's masking sheet 110 comprising two rectangular panels 112, 114 of substantially the same size and shape.
The panels constitute adjacent parts of an elongate sheet substrate. Panel 112 comprises a substantially opaque, preferably white, polyolefin or polyester flexible street materiel. Panel 114 comprises a substantially transparent polyolefin or polyester flexible sheet material. The panels are joined together along a common edge 116 by welding S or other means, for example by adhesive, to form a transversely extending hinge.
An upper edge portion 118 of panel 112. opposite the common edge 16. is provided by a strip of pressure sensitive adhesive 120. The adhesive strip 120 extends from one side of the panel 112 to the other and forms the upper edge 122 of the panel, opposite common edge 116. The adhesive strip overlaps the top edge portion of the sheet substrate of the panel 112.
The upper edge portion 118 of the pane 112 has a stiffness greater than the remainder of the panel 112 so that the edge portion 118 does not distort when the sheets are separated from each other in readiness for use. The dimensions of the panel 114 are preferably such that it completely overlays the adhesive strip when the panels are brought together.
As shown in Figures 2 and 3 the panels may be hinged about the common edge 116 so as to unite the two panels, either prior to use for ease of storage and/cr transportation.
or in order to envelop selected strands of hair in use. Similarly the panels may be hinged apart to separate the panels in readiness for use to receive selected strands of hair between the panels.
Prior to use, the panels 112 and 114 are separated in readiness for use by releasing the upper edge portion 126 from the adhesive strip 120 holding the panels together.
In use, once the panels are separated, strands of a head of hair to be treated (not shown) are selected by the hairdresser and the panel 112 is positioned under the strands in a known manner such that the adhesive strip 120 is located adjacent the scalp. The adhesive adheres to the selected strands, which are then coated by the hairdresser with a treatment solution, for example a liquid colouring substance. The panel 114 is then folded over panel 112 about the common transverse hinge and brought into proximity with panel 112 to close the envelope so formed as indicated in the drawing of Figure 2.
Panel 114 is held with respect to panel 112 by cohesive forces acting on panel 112 due to the surface tension of the treatment solution on the panel 114. The fact that panel
S
114 is transparent enables the hairdresser to monitor the coloration process of the selected strands of hair without either having to remove the masking sheet from the hair or peel back the panel 114 to monitor the process. Where the other panel 112 is opaque, for example white, this provides a convenient colour over which to view the S colouring process. In this respect, and with reference to the orientation of the attached masking sheet, panel 114 may be considered a front panel and panel 112 a rear panel when the masking sheet is folded in the closed configuration of Figure 2.
In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention a chemical reagent is applied to the inward facing surface of at least one of the panels 112, 114, that is to say one of both of the sides of the panels that face each other when the panels are bought together as shown in Figure 2. The reagent is selected from one of a group of chemicals that react with hair bleaching and/or colouring agent(s) to generate heat and thereby promote the bleaching/colouring process in use, such chemicals being well known to those skilled in the art.
In accordance with another embodiment of the present invention, a first chemical reagent is applied to the inward facing surface of one of the panels 112, 114 and a second chemical reagent is applied to the inward facing surface of the other of the panels 112, 114, which reacts with the first reagent, as previously mentioned to generate heat and thereby promote the bleaching/colouring process. In such an embodiment a sheet 130 of release material, as shown in Figure 4, may be provided to separate the adjacent surfaces of the panels before use. Alternatively the chemical reagents could be selected so that they are inert when in contact with each other and activated by water or a water based solution or hair treatment chemical(s).
In another embodiment the reagent material is applied solely to the sheet 130 which may be of any suitable material too which the reagent may be applied. The sheet 130 may be permanently or temporarily connected or joined to the panels 112, 114 or may be separate, for example, the sheet 130 may comprise a paper based sheet material to which the reagent is applied by printing or other suitable process. The sheet 130 may be loosely held between the panels 112.114 or connected thereto by adhesive or other means. In the latter case the sheet may be divided to form patches that are attached to one of both of the panels.
