Description

Side Door for a Vehicle, in particular a Passenger Vehicle The invention relates to a side door according to the preamble of patent claim 1.
Such a side door for a vehicle, in particular a passenger vehicle, can be found in FR 2 941 175 Al. The side door comprises at least on inner panel and at least one side intrusion beam. The side intrusion beam is mounted on the inner panel at least indirectly.
Such a side intrusion beam serves to protect occupants of the vehicle in case of a side impact. Such a side intrusion beam is also referred to as an "anti-intrusion beam" which serves as a side impact protection. In FR 2 941 175 Al, the side impact beam is tubular and has a circular hollow-cross section.
Moreover, US 5,868,456 shows a side intrusion beam assembly comprising a pair of end brackets and a beam body coupled to said end brackets. The beam body has a length having a centre portion and end portions, said centre portion being heat treated and said end portions being non-heat treated. The beam body is tubular and has a triangular hollow-cross section.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a side door of the aforementioned kind, by means of which side door occupants of the vehicle can be protected particularly effectively in case of a side impact.
This object is solved by a side door having the features of patent claim 1. Advantageous embodiments with expedient and non-trivial developments of the invention are indicated in the other patent claims.
In order to provide a side door of the kind indicated in the preamble of patent claim 1, by means of which side door occupants of the vehicle can be protected particularly effectively in case of a side impact, according to the present invention, the side intrusion beam comprises three members being arranged so as to form a triangular structure which is arranged in a plane having a normal which extends angularly, in particular perpendicularly, to the side door's longitudinal direction.
With respect to the side door being mounted on a body of the vehicle, the side door is pivotable relative to the body between a closed position and at least one open position. In the closed position, at least a portion of a through opening of the body is covered by the side door. In the open position, the portion is uncovered by the side door. In the open position, the portion is uncovered. In the closed position of the side door, the longitudinal direction of the side door corresponds with the longitudinal direction of the vehicle. This means the normal of the plane extends in the transverse direction of the vehicle with respect to the closed position of the side door pivotably held on the body.
In case of a side impact, forces act upon the side door in the transverse direction of the vehicle towards its interior. During such a side impact excessive intrusions into the interior can be avoided by the side intrusion beam since its triangular structure is particularly stiff.
Thereby, occupants of the vehicle can be protected particularly effectively in case of a side impact. Moreover, foam elements inside the side door and/or any other such elements or arrangements can be avoided by the side intrusion beam since the triangular structure can provide a particularly high side impact protection. As a consequence, the weight and the cost of the side door can be kept particularly low. Moreover, the side intrusion beam itself can be manufactured in a very cost-efficient and easy way.
Further advantages, features, and details of the invention derive from the following description of a preferred embodiment as well as from the drawings. The features and feature combinations previously mentioned in the description as well as the features and feature combinations mentioned in the following description of the figures and/or shown in the figures alone can be employed not only in the respective indicated combination but also in any other combination or taken alone without leaving the scope of the invention.
The drawings show in: Fig. 1 part of a schematic and perspective side view of an inner panel of a side door, to which inner panel a side intrusion beam is mounted at least indirectly, the side intrusion beam comprising three members arranged so as to form a triangular structure arranged in a plane having a normal extending angularly to the side door's longitudinal direction; and Fig. 2 a schematic and perspective side view of the side intrusion beam.
In the figures the same elements or elements having the same functions are designated with the same reference signs.
Fig. 1 shows an inner panel 10 for a side door for a vehicle in the form of a passenger vehicle. For example, the inner panel 10 is made of a metallic material. With respect to an assembled state of the passenger vehicle, the side door is pivotably mounted on a body of the passenger vehicle. Thus, the side door can be pivoted relative to the body between a closed position and at least one open position. In the closed position, at least a portion of a through opening of the body is covered by the side. In the open position, the portion is uncovered.
The side door and, thus, the inner panel 10 have a longitudinal direction which corresponds with the longitudinal direction of the vehicle in the closed position. Thus, in the closed position, a transverse direction of the side door and the inner panel 10 corresponds with the transverse direction of the vehicle. Moreover, the vertical direction of the side door and the inner panel 10 corresponds with the vertical direction of the vehicle.
The side door can further comprise at least one outer panel not shown in Fig. 1. For example, at least a portion of the inner panel 10 is outwardly covered by the outer panel in the transverse direction of the side door and, thus, the inner panel 10. Thus, the outer panel is a cladding element for covering at least a portion of the inner panel 10. The outer panel can be made of a metallic material.
The side door has a floor region 12. In the closed position of the side door, at least a portion of a side sill of the body is outwardly covered in the transverse direction of the vehicle by the floor region 12. Thus, in the event of a side impact, the side door can be supported on the side sill in the transverse direction of the vehicle via the floor region 12.
Thereby, excessive and undesired movements of the side door can be avoided in case of a side impact. This means the side door can be supported on the side sill particularly advantageously in case of a side impact.
In case of such a side impact, impact forces act upon the side door in the transverse direction of the vehicle towards its interior. In order to protect occupants of the passenger vehicle, the side door further comprises a side intrusion beam 14 which is mounted on the inner panel 10 by mounting brackets 16, 18 and 20. As can be seen in Fig. 1, the mounting brackets 18 and 20 are arranged in the floor region 12. The mounting bracket 18 is arranged in a middle area of the inner panel 10, wherein the mounting bracket 20 is arranged in a corner region 22 of the inner panel 10.
For example, the mounting brackets 16, 18 and 20 are made of a metallic material.
Preferably, the mounting brackets 16, 18 and 20 are made of sheet metal so that cost-intensive structural foams can be avoided. For example, the mounting brackets 16, 18 and 20 are welded, in particular spot welded, to the inner panel 10 so that the mounting brackets 16, 18 and 20 can be mounted on the inner panel 10 particularly cost-efficiently.
Spot welding is a very easy standard process.
For example, the side intrusion beam 14 is made of a metallic material. The side intrusion beam 14 can be glued and/or welded, in particular fillet welded, to the mounting brackets 16, 18 and 20. Thus, the side intrusion beam 14 shown in Fig. 2 in more detail is mounted on the inner panel 10 via the mounting brackets 16, 18 and 20.
As can be seen from Figs. 1 and 2, the side intrusion beam 14 comprises three members 24a-c which are, for example, formed in the manner of struts. Preferably, the members 24a-c are formed in one piece. The three members 24a-c are arranged so as to form a triangular structure 26 of the side intrusion beam 14, the triangular structure 26 being arranged in a plane having a normal extending angularly, in particular perpendicularly, to the side door's longitudinal direction. The members 24a-c are bent so as to form the triangular structure 26. Thus, the triangular structure 26 has rounded inner corners 28 as well as rounded outer corners 30. The members 24a-c bound a through opening 25 of the triangular structure 26. Thus, the weight of the side intrusion beam 14 can be kept particularly low.
For example, the members 24a-c and, thus, the triangular structure 26 have a hollow-cross section which is circular. For example, the triangular structure 26 is made of one single tube which is bent so as to form the members 24a-c and the triangular structure 26. Thus, the members 24a-c are tubular. In Figs. 1 and 2, respective free ends 32 of said tube can be seen. For example, the free ends 32 are not connected to one another. Alternatively, the ends 32 can be connected, in particular welded, to one another. Since the triangular structure 26 is formed from a single tube, the side intrusion beam 14 can be manufactured particularly cost-efficiently, wherein tube bending is an easy and accurate process.
The triangular structure 26 provides a particularly high stiffness of the side intrusion beam 14 so that occupants of the passenger vehicle can be protected particularly effectively in case of a side impact. Moreover, the side intrusion beam 14 has a simple design and geometry which can be modified as per requirement, i.e. in a need-based manner. Moreover, the design of the mounting brackets 16, 18 and 20 can be modified in a need-based manner.
Preferably, the mounting brackets 16, 18 and 20 have respective receptacles having respective receiving contours which correspond with respective outer contours of the members 24a-c. Thus, the members 24a-c can be arranged at least partially and precisely in said receptacles.
As can be seen from Fig. 1, the side intrusion beam 14 is arranged in a corner region 34 of the inner panel 10. This means the lower left outer corner 30 is arranged in the lower left corner region 34 of the inner panel 10.
