Abstract

Poultry feeder for feeding vegetable matter to fowl. The feeder comprises a container 1 the lower section 4 of which is formed from mesh. Poultry are able access the contents of the container via the mesh. The container may be provided with a lid 2. Ring attachments 3 allow the feeder to be suspended from a support frame or ceiling. Alternatively the feeder may be provided with legs of may be fastened to a wall.

Description

FOWL FEEDING DEVICES

This invention relates to devices which may be used to feed vegetable mailer to fowl.

In the wild state fowl seek and eat vegetable mailer and seeds in the countryside.

However the movements of domesticated fowl such as poultry have to be restricted so that they may be protected from predators and their eggs readily harvested.

With the loss of the ability to roam and harvest their own food alternative feed stuffs have to be supplied and, to eliminate the labour of collecting fresh vegetables onadaily basis, $oultry today are conventionally fed grain or pelletised grain products placed in'roughs or racks. Attempts to feed freshly gathered vegetableS mailer to poultry from troughs or racks normally result in whole plants or leaves being removed from the feeders and littered and soiled across the surrounding area which has to cleared. The cleared mailer is usually too soiled to be reused.

According to the present invention means are provided with which freshly gathered plants, weeds, and household vegetable waste may be fed to poultry in a controlled manner but without wasteful littering, soiling or floor cleaning work Specific examples of the invention, which do not delimit it, are described below and by reference to the accompanying drawings.

EXAMPLE 1

Figure 1 shews a form of the invention in which a cylindrical container (1) with a hinged lid (2) and ring attachments (3) has as it's lower end a bowl shaped container (4) formed from a mesh with mesh sizes such that poultry may peck at the contents of the bowl. To use the device cords or chains are passed through the rings (3) and then fastened to a support frame or a ceiling. The cords or chain lengths arc then adjusted so that the bowl (4) is at such a distance from the floor that the poultry may peck at the contents of the bowl.

Raising the container lid (2) enables vegetable plant matter, weeds or kitchen waste to be loaded into the cylindrical container (1).

Example 2.

Figure 2 shews a form of the device in which the container with a rectangular cross section and fitted with a hinged lid (5) has the lower portion formed from a mesh (6) which extends as an arc below and between the two long faces (7) of the container The device is provided with flanges (8) with which it may be fastened to a wall or uprights at such a height that fowl may readily feed on the contents of the device.

The mesh sizes are such that poultry may feed from the plant or vegetable matter loaded into the device.
