Abstract
251,039. Green & Sons, Ltd., G., and Miles, W. E. Feb. 3, 1925. Connecting uppers to insoles and soles.-A boot or shoe is characterized in that the upper is secured to the insole by staples and the outer sole is secured only by adhesive. An insole is channelled each side at 2, Fig. 1, on the flesh side to form lips 4 to which the upper is stapled. In most cases the toe end of the insole is left uncut but with round-toed shoes the channel 2 may be continued round the toe. The insole is tacked to a last with the channels uppermost and the upper is pulled over and tacked down. The toe tacks are removed and if a thermoplastic toe puff is used the: shoe is heated. It is placed in a bed lasting machine and the puff, lining &c. are cut away at the edge, leaving # in. to “ in. extending over the insole on the last. The edge of the toe cap is left of greater width than the trimmed edges 8, Fig. 5, of the puff and lining, so that when turned down it will overlap these materials and contact with the insole. Before the puff stiffens the toe portion of the upper is wiped over with celluloid solution or the like to secure it to the insole, which is also brushed with the solution. The lips 4 are raised and the upper is stapled at 9. After stapling, lasting tacks are removed and the work is lightly pounded and the lips 4 flattened. Bottom filling is added and the edges of the lasted upper are roughened for the sole laying. The sole is roughened on the flesh side and secured by cement. Where the channelling is continued at the toe the upper is stapled all round.
