Abstract

A display for artwork such as a canvas, paper or similar substrate, comprises a mounting structure L which can be pushed into place on a frame I having an inner rim K, thereby securing the mounting structure in the frame and allowing it to be removed with ease and replaced by another compatible mounting structure. The canvas is placed over the mounting structure L and folded around it and secured to the rear thereof by staples. The frame rim K is chamfered at J to make it easier to push the mounting structure L in, and the tight fit of the mounting structure over the frame rim holds it in place.

Description

A MOUNTING STRUCTURE FOR ARTWORK WITH DEDICTED FRAME
The present invention relates to a mounting structure and dedicated frame for displaying artwork.
Artists canvases are sometimes framed in such a way that the edge and sides of the canvas are visible.
This is usually achieved by using a frame that, in cross-section. is "L" shaped; this type of frame is somctinies referred to as a "Tray-Frame'S. Thc canvas which is attached to a support, luiown as a stretcher, is fixed into the frame from behind by a variety of means, This is normally the preserve of a professional picture framer and can prove difficult to achieve without the correct tools and equipment.
Ihe present invention provides a quick and simple Lo use alternative which gives a similar result in outward appearance to the more usual combination of frame and canvas.
The invention consists of two separate components. The display frame (Figure 5-I) and the niounting sftucture (Figure 5-k).
Ihe display frame is made from wood (or material with similar properties) and is constructed to include an inner rim about which the mounting structure fits (Figure 4-K).
The mounting structure (Figure 4-L) when assembled and complete with canvas attached, is pushed into place over the inner rim of the display frame (Figure 4-K) thus completing the framing of the artwork. The ehamlèr on the inner edge of the rim (Figure 4-J) assists this process.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which; Figure 1 Shows, in perspective, the mounting structure in its supplied state and the canvas to which it will he attached.
Figure 2 Shows in plain view the face of the cardboard element that touches the canvas.
Figure 3 Shows, in cross-section, the display frame and its inner rim.
Figure 4 This shows in perspective and cut-away view the display frame with the completed mounting structure in place.
Figure 5 Ihis shows in perspective the completed display frame and mounting siructure, together.
Figure 6 This shows in cross-section, the mounting structure with one flap secured to the side of the rigid frame.
Figure 7 This shows in cross-section, [he mounting structure with its second flap secured.
Figure 8 This shows in perspective the canvas folded between the hap of the mounting structure and the rigid frame.
Figure 9 Ihis shows in perspective a rear view of [lie completed mounting structure.
With the margin of the canvas stapled to it.
As shown in Figure 1, the mounting struclure has wo main components, a rigid frame (Figure 1-A) made ol wood (or material with similar properues) and a cardboard (or similar foldable malerial) element (Figure 1-B) which is adhered to the rigid frame on all four of the frames sides (Figure 1-F).
The cardboard element is cut partially through from the side that is not adhered to the rigid frame, along a line that is coincidental to the outer edge of the rigid frames contact with the cardboard. This assists the card bending through 90 degrees in order to abut the outer face of the frame (Figure 6-M) The cardboard clement is shaped so that, when the four flaps (Figure l-E) arc folded through 90 degrees to abut the outer faces of the rigid frame, their dimensions in height and width are the same as those of the corresponding outer faces of the rigid frame.
Once complete (Figure 5-L) the mounting structure can be pushed onto the inner nm of the display frame (Figure 5-I).
The attachmcnt of the artwork to the mounting structure is executed by placing the mounting structure onto the reverse side of the canvas with its cardboard element in contact with the canvas (Figure 1-C).
A sufficient margin is left between the outer edges of the mounting structure and the outer edges of Ihe canvas (Figure 1-c) to allow the canvas to he folded and staples to the hack of the rigid frame (Figure I-U).
Initially the canvas is attached to the mounting structure by the double sided adhesive tape that is present, with its protective liner in place, on all four flaps that are in contact with the canvas (Figure 2-D) and on two opposite flaps on the face that touches the rigid frame (Figure l-D). It is the two longest flaps to which the adhesive tape is applied on both faces.
The two flaps with adhesive tape on both faces arc in turn, firstly attached to the reverse side of the canvas buy means of the adhesive tape. Secondly the flap, with canvas attached, is folded through 90 degrees to abut the outer face of the rigid frame to which it is then attached by means of the adhesive tape (Figure 6-C).
When these two flaps are attached to the rigid frame it can he observed that the canvas is being put under tension and that the cardboard element is bowing away from the canvas (I igure 7-U).
It is important that the two sides are executed in turn because if attenipted simultaneously the resultant lension is so great that in use Ihe operalion is rendered impossible.
The remaining two flaps of the mounting structure are then, in turn attached to the canvas by means of the adhesive tape their present (Figure 2-D). These flaps with canvas attached are then folded through degrees to abut the outer face of the rigid frame. As this is being executed the portion of the canvas that is not attached to any of the four flaps is folded in such a way that it is pressed between the two abutting surfaces of the cardboard flap and the rigid frame (Figure 8).
Ihe margin of the canvas is Ihen Iblded flat against the hack edge of the rigid frame and secured there by staples (Figure 9-P). The presence of the canvas between the cardboard tIap and the rigid frame results in a presentable appearance and negates the need to remove any excess material or perform any irreversible act.
