Abstract

A picture frame A comprises a card insert B to which a piece of artwork can be attached and a hanging bracket (K, figure 7), wherein the card insert can be inserted and removed from the frame from the front. Inner faces of the frame E are preferably sloped to aid insertion of the insert and for visibility of the sides of the insert. An artwork (J, figure 3) may be trimmed to a size for attachment to the insert and attached using double-sided adhesive tape (G) provided on the insert. The sides of the insert can be folded through ninety degrees and the artwork pulled in at its corners. Flaps (D, figure 4) provided on the insert may then be folded outwards and inserted into slots (C) provided in the frame. The hanging bracket is preferably inserted into one of said slots.

Description

A Picture Frame with Card Insert and Hanging Bracket This invention relates to a picture frame and card insert for the display of artworks on canvas, paper or similar materials to give the effect of a stretched canvas in a tray frame.
Tray or box frames for canvases have been used for many years and have usually been the preserve of professional picture framers. By leaving a gap between the frame and the canvas the canvas appears to float in the frame which is another name for this type of presentation, that is "Float Frame".
This invention is designed to be used by anyone as an easy to use alternative, producing a similar effect by different means.
The current popularity of inkjet printing to produce either photographs or reproductions of works of art on many different substrates has given rise to a much increased use of such frames.
Without the use of special tools or mechanical fixings (for example; staples) an inkjet print on canvas for example, can be stuck to the card insert and then pushed into the frame where it locates into a slot giving a finished product with minimum training or acquired skill.
As the insert with its attached artwork is put into the frame from the front, it can also be removed from the front. This makes it possible to fix the frame permanently to the wall giving the opportunity to use it for point of sale material for example, which would need to be changed frequently, the hanging brackets can be used to fix the frame to the wall or hang the frame on a picture hook. The picture frame would be made preferably from wood or a similar material, the insert from solid board card or corrugated cardboard or similar and the hanging bracket from metal or plastic.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1.
This shows a perspective view of the frame (A) and insert (B) with a cut-away section showing how the insert fits into the frame. The flap (D) of the insert, fits into the slot (C) of the frame. The inner sloping face (E) of the frame gives a gap between the face of the frame (F) and the insert (B).
Figure 2.
This shows in plan view the card insert flat with the surface that touches the artwork facing up, showing the double sided adhesive tape (G), the crease lines (H) and the cut-away corners (I).
Figure 3.
This shows the insert (B) placed on top of the artwork (J) which has been cut to a size that allows the insert to be stuck to it.
Figure 4.
This shows the insert (B) with artwork (J) attached, folded up ready to be inserted into the frame. The flaps (D) are bent out to help them locate into the slot (C). It also shows how the artwork has been pulled in a t the corners to form a neat join.
Figure 5.
This shows the insert (B) being pushed into the frame (A) from the front. The sloping inner faces (E) guiding the insert in and pushing back the flaps (D) so that, when the insert is pushed further into the frame, the flaps spring out into the slot (C).
Figure 6.
This shows in cross-section the frame (A) and the insert (B) in its finished state.
Figure 7.
This shows the hanging bracket (K) with its hole (L) and how it fits into the slot (C) in the frame (A) as well as the insert (B).
In use the artwork is trimmed to a size that allows the insert to be stuck to it.
Figure 2 shows the insert flat with its double sided adhesive tape on the area between the crease lines. These form the sides of the insert when finished.
The artwork is placed face down on a flat surface, then has the insert stuck to it by means of the double sided adhesive tape (Figure 3.G).
The sides of the insert are then folded up through ninety degrees and the artwork is pulled in at the corners to form a neat corner joint with no cutting or gluing of the material (Figure 4).
The small flaps (D) are bent out to help in the insertion of the card insert into the frame (Figure 5). When the insert is pushed in further the flaps (D) spring into the slots (C) thus securing the insert into the frame (Figure 6).
The hanging bracket (K) is then pushed into the slot (C) which is wide enough to accept both the bracket and the insert.
Figure 1 shows the finished picture frame and insert together with the hanging bracket.

Claims (7)
