Separators for storage batteries are made of wood veneer having ribs of felted and pressed cellulose made by treating chemical wood pulp or by chemically treating wood which has been pulped mechanically. The ribs may be applied to one or both sides or they may completely sur. round the veneer. They may be attached by glueing, clamping: or sewing and are arranged with regard to the fibre of the veneer so as to strengthen the completed separator.
