[Class 13 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] Shock-proof armourings are produced by uniting worm-free silk cocoons to form elastic plates, for example, by sewing, sticking or glueing them together, uniting a number of said plates to form a thicker plate, as by glueing or pasting together, and subjecting the resulting thicker plate to a high pressure, for example 100-150 atmospheres. The assembled plates may be provided with outer layers and/or intermediate layers of other materials such as natural silk strewn with colophony and coated with lacquer. Alternatively, mercerized cotton layers may be used, and in that case, the final pressure is 150-200 atmospheres. The layers may be treated with an astringent medium such as alum, before being united, and where intermediate layers are employed, these may be disposed so that the respective threads are at angles to each other.
