Soldering-irons.- A soldering-iron comprises a perforated bit screwed into one end of a cylindrical solder container, to the other end of which is attached by a screw plug having a plugged admission hole a hollow handle containing a slidable valve rod for closing the perforation in the bit. An interchangeable perforated bit 11 is screwed to a copper or brass container 10, to the screwed cap 17 of which are connected two straps 16 extending from the handle tube 15. The tube, which has a heat-insulating handle 18, receives a valve-rod 25, which is pressed forward by a spring 27 and is retracted by a thumb or finger piece 33 secured to the upper plate 31 of a pair of plates 31, 30 which are separated by distance pieces and bolted and riveted together. These plates, which are rotatably mounted on the tube, engage an interposed cross-piece 29, which is secured to the rod and passes through slots in the tube. The solder may be inserted in molten, plug, bullet or shot form through an inlet 19, which is closed by a plug 21 slidably and rotatably mounted on the rod. In order that the trigger may be close to the container the plates may be perforated at 34 so that a length of solder may be passed therethrough into the inlet 19. A gas burner or a blowlamp may be secured to the container, or an electric heating element may be contained therein. The bit may have an external transverse groove into which the perforation 12 extends so as to receive telegraph or other wires.
