This invention relates to improvements in soldering-irons, such as are used by plumbers, tinners and others, particularly in soldering-irons in which the solder is contained within the iron, and it is the principal object of the invention to combine such an iron with an electric heater for the solder.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel and improved solderingiron equipped with a chamber having a solder inlet closed by a readily operable cover of peculiar construction.
A further object of the invention is a soldering-iron provided with a readily operable needle-valve for the eiicient control of the molten metal, allowing a use of the iron under elimination of all danger to the operator.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a soldering-iron embodying means for adjusting the needle-valve and in the provision of suitable and improved means for operating the needle of the valve.
It is also one of the objects of my invention to rovide an electrical resistance in a cylindrlcal partof the head having its lead wires insulated and guided through suitable side members and the handle of the soldering-iron.
These and other objects and advantages of my invention will become more fully known as the description thereof proceeds, and will then be more specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a solderingiron constructed according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation of the upper part of my improved solderingiron.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the soldering-iron on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Figure 2.
As illustrated on the drawing, the soldering-iron consists substantial] of the head of the .customary con guration and preferably made of copper or other suitable heat retaining material, .preferably made i ntegrally with a cylindrical body part 11 having its lower end lsomewhat reduced and threaded, as at 12, for the attachment of a ca 13 having an inner thread to engage the t read 12.
This cap has a chamber 14 formed therein for the reception of the solder which is introduced through a nipple 15 adapted to be closed by a circular cover 16 having a finger 17 formed therewith and which is turnably attached, as at 18, to the nipple and slides within a slot 19 in said nipple, the wall of which limits the movement of the cover to eiiect a positive closure.
The cap has attached thereto, or is integrally made with two hollow side elements or members 20 and 21, connected at their lower ends by means of a plug element 22 having a threaded lower end for the reception of the suitably threaded handle 23, preferably made of wood or other heat insulating material.
The head 10 is at its apex provided with a comparatively long channel or bore 24 through which extends the upper end of the needle 25 of a control valve..
The opposite end of this needle is attached to an operating rod 26 made in two articulated parts, as at 27, having its lower end extended into/a bore 28 in the handle 23 in which a spring 29 rests with its lower end against the bottom wall of the bore, while its upper end is wound about a pin 30 on the lower end of rod 26.
Intermediate its ends, the rod 26 has a reduced part 31 formed with an opening 32 therein through which engages the end of a pawl 33 pivoted intermediate it's ends, as at 34, to the plug element 22 and having a broadened handle 35.
The rod 26 enters the cap 13 through a threaded stem 36 screwed with its upper end into the lower partof the cap and having attached thereto at its lower end an adjusting nut 37 allowing an adjustment of the rod 26 and needle 25 to project more or less through openin 24. v
The ead 1() and its cylindrical part contains an insulated hollow cylindrical body 38 of mica or the like, about which a resistance coil 39 is wound, to the ends of which are connected the lead wires 40 and 41 insulated from the body of the iron as at 42 and 43, and guided through the hollow member 20 and 21 and through suitable bores in the plug member 22 and similar bores in the handle 23, to the outside as at 44, to be attached to a plug of any well known type.
It will be clear that any desired form of vention as an example, and that changesA ma y be made in the general arrangement an in the specification of the minor details of my invention, as fall within the scope ofthe appended claim without departure from the principles involved and from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire'to protect by Letters Patent is:
vIn an electrical soldering-iron including a hollow head having a comparatively long bore in the direction of its longitudinal axis,
a needle valve including a needle controlling said bore, a cap removably attached to said head alnl having a solder chamber formed therein, an articulated operating rod for said needle, to facilitate its solder control, a nipple on said cap for supplying solder to said chamber, formed with a slot, a circular cover for said nipple sliding in the slot thereof, an operating finger on said cover, a hollow cylindrical mica body within said head, a resistance coil wound about said body, and means for connecting said coil with a source of electricity.
