Abstract

A device for repairing a leak in a pipe comprises a repair patch or pipe-receiving portion 1 and a pair of arms for changing the shape of the pipe-receiving portion. The device also comprises a resiliently deformable material, and/or one or more flexible waterproof membranes. The device may comprise a spring and the arms may be detachable from the patch. The patch may contain one or more cutouts to accommodate any deformities or imperfections in the pipe.

Description

Pipe Attachment This invention relates to a pipe attachment. The pipe attachment can be used to stop leaks from domestic and commercial plumbing pipes, joints, fittings and valves in areas where S access to the leak source is severely restricted, and/or where the space to make a repair is limited. The pipe attachment can be applied from a distance, directly and instantly, without using tools, and without having to shut down or isolate the supply.
Plumbing pipes, joints, fittings and valves in domestic dwellings and commercial facilities that are in constant use occasionally fail and leak. Commonly, the majority of these pipes, joints, fittings and valves are hidden from view. Located in loft spaces, wall cavities, behind appliances, under floorboards, and in designated areas such as the domestic airing cupboard and commercial boiler room, pipes, joints, fittings and valves are often located in areas that are difficult to access and/or where space is limited. Although there exist a variety of solutions for containing leaks from pipes, joints, fittings and valves, all require ample space around the immediate area of the leak source and/or direct access to it from multiple angles in order to be effective. Even the simplest of existing solutions requires that the leak source be no further than an arms length from the repairer, and that it be in a space no narrower than the width of a human hand plus that required to operate a tool and/or leak repair solution sufficiently enough to create a watertight seal. As a result, repairing leaks in areas that are difficult to access and/or where space is limited can prove time consuming and costly. Repairing a leak from a pipe, joint, fitting and/or valve at the back of a domestic airing cupboard for example, can sometimes mean having to temporarily decommission, drain, and move the hot water cylinder and connected central heating pipework. And, even after gaining access to the leak source via this lengthy process, the concentration of pipework, joints, fittings and valves can be such that the space needed to make a repair with traditional tools and/or existing leak repair solutions often has to be created by cutting away multiple undamaged, fully functioning pipes located adjacent to, and/or running parallel with, the leak source.
The invention described herein however, provides a means with which to instantly and directly contain a leak, from a distance, and with great precision, in areas where the leak source is difficult to reach and/or the space for making a repair is limited, without using tools, without having to isolate or shut-off the supply, and without having to move existing plumbing appliances or pipework.
The invention comprises a pipe-receiving portion, one or more levers, a resiliently S deformable material, and/or one or more flexible waterproof membranes, whereby the pipe-receiving portion is releasably secured directly and externally onto a pipe by way of one or more springs that are attached to, or are an integral part of, the invention's structure. The invention can be engaged and disengaged from a pipe using leverage provided by the one or more levers, which may be detachable and/or extendable. By increasing the length of the one or more levers, the repair can be made from a distance, with the additional leverage allowing for the force of the one or more springs to be such that the repair has a level of integrity, and thus permanency, superior to that offered by existing solutions. By applying force to the one or more levers, the form of the pipe-receiving portion can be altered before being applied directly onto the leak source, returning to its original shape once the force is removed, and performing a clamp-like function around, and/or against, the leak source.
Used in conjunction with a resiliently deformable material and/or one or more flexible waterproof membranes, the pipe-receiving portion can be used to contain leaks from pipes, joints, fittings and/or valves in areas where access to the leak source is severely restricted, and/or in spaces that are as narrow as a pipes width. Once in place, the one or more levers can then be detached from the pipe-receiving portion, leaving attached to the pipe an unobtrusive, self-sealing, watertight repair.
The invention can be applied directly onto wet surfaces, to contain both high and low pressure leaks, discharging either hot or cold water, without having to isolate or shut down the supply, and without the use of tools. The invention will stop the leak, ceasing any further damage to possessions and property, whilst allowing the continued use of the water system and water fed appliances.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 Shows the method of application, from a distance, directly and externally onto a leak, in an area that is hard to access and where the space for making a repair is limited.
Figure 1 illustrates the method of application in sequence, whereby: A. The form of the pipe-receiving portion (1), is altered by applying force to one or more levers (2), which is then applied to a leak (3), in an area that is hard to access and where the space for making a repair is limited (4).
B. The force is then removed from the one or more levers (5), allowing the pipe-receiving portion to return to its original shape (6), attaching itself to the pipe (7).
is C. The one or more levers are then detached from the pipe-receiving portion (8), leaving in place an unobtrusive, self-sealing, watertight repair (9).
