Abstract
250,360. Comyn, B. D., and White, W. A. Feb. 10, 1925. Purifying liquids; separating by gravity; filters with loose filtering-materials.-A process for separating water and oil, part of the latter being in the state of an emulsion, consists in removing the bulk of the oil under gravity and passing the residue of the mixture through a filter of large superficial area and small depth consisting of sand or like granular or pulverulent material. Fig. 1 shows gravity-separation apparatus as described in Specification 227,544 provided at the base with a shallow bed of sand on a layer of felt c on a perforated plate d supported by a grid a. There is a second grid e above and slightly penetrating the sand. The mixture enters a chamber 7 through symmetrically arranged pipes 6. Partial separation takes place in a chamber 8, the water passing to a secondary separating chamber 12, and thence over a wall 16, up an annulus 19, and down an annulus 21 and being finally filtered by the layer of sand. The oil retained by the sand is removed by a reverse flow through the filter and carried away through a perforated pipe f.
