Description

DESCRIPTION
MOBILE MIXING APPARATUS
The present invention r&ates to mobe mixing apparatus and in particular, but not exclusively, to mobe concrete mixers.
s Many types of mobfle concrete mixers exist which aUow concrete to be mixed on site, an example of which is shown in our earHer patent application W02008/152428. However, in some circumstances the physical dimensions of the concrete mixer are limited, which in turn limits the capacity of concrete which the mixer can supply. An example is where a concrete mixer is mounted on a rafiway wagon, in which case the mixer must fit within a predetermined envelope or proffle in order to ensure that the wagon and the mixer mounted thereon can pass safely through tunn&s. past other trains running on adjacent tracks and the like It has been found that mounting existing concrete mixers, such as that disclosed is in W02008/152426, on a railway wagon causes the assembly to be outside the predetermined env&ope or profUe (commonly referred to as being "out of gauge'). As a consequence, it is necessary to reduce the size, and therefore the capacity, of the concrete mixer.
In accordance with a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a mobile mixing apparatus comprising first and second mixers, each configured to produce a mixed product and being operable independently of the other, a common receiving means for receiving the mixed product from the first and second mixers and means for discharging mixed product from the common receiving means.
By having more than one mixer, the sze of each individua mixer can be reduced. in order to meet space and/or size constraints, but the overa voume of mixed product produced by the mobUe mixing apparatus need not be unduly compromised.
s Preferably, the common receiving means is ocated between the first and second mixers.
In a preferred embodiment, each of the first and second mixers is configured to discharge mixed product in a predetermined direction, the directions of discharge of the first and second mixers being opposfte to one another.
Preferably, each of the first and second mixers is configured to produce a mixed product from a pluraUty of components.
Preferably, the first and second mixers are substantiafly identicaL In a preferred embodiment, the first and second mixers are concrete mixers configured to produce mixed concrete.
Each of the first and second mixers is preferaby mounted on a supporUng frame.
The first and second mixers may be mounted on separate supporfing frames.
The or each frame may convenienfly he an SO containeNsixed frame.
The common receiving means may comprise a turret.
The means for discharging mixed product form the common receMng means is preferably adjustable in order to determined the direction of discharge.
The means for discharging mixed product from the common receiving means may comprise s chute.
In one embodiment, the first and second mixers and the common receiving means are each mounted on a railway wagon and may be mounted on the same railway vehicle.
In accordance with a second aspect of the present invention a raway vehicle comprises a rnobe mixing apparatus in accordance with the first aspect of the invention.
By way of example only, a specific embodiment of the present invention wiU now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: is Fig. 1 is a side view of an embodiment of mixing apparatus in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the supporting frame of the mixing apparatus of Fig. 1;and Fig. 3 is a side view of the mixing apparatus of Figs. I and 2, shown mounted on a raHway wagon (some components shown in Figs. 1 and 2 have been omitted for clarity).
The drawings ifiustrate a concrete mixing apparatus which is particularly sLuted for mounting on a railway wagon W (Fig. 3), The mixing apparatus comprises two identical ccncrete mixers 10, each of which can be operated independently of the other and feeds mixed concrete via mixing/discharge auger conveyor 12 to a common discharge turret 14 located between the two concrete mixers 10. Since the two concrete mixers are identical, the only dftference being that they are mounted wfth their output auger conveyors 12 in opposite, facing directions, the foflowing description appes to both concrete mixers 10.
Each concrete mixer 10 is generafly conventional and comprises a first hopper 16 divided by a central ongitudinaUy extending baffle plate 18 into two compartments, for storing sand and aggregate respectiv&y. A further hopper 20 is located between the first hopper 16 and the mixing/discharge auger conveyor 12 and is adapted to hold cement The hoppers are contoured to correspond to the gauge (the permitted profile) of the railway on which it is designed to operate. in order to maximise their volume.
is An elongate screw conveyor 22 is located at the base of each of the compartments of the first hopper 16 for discharging the contents of the hopper. The discharge of products from the two compartments of the hopper 16 is controHed by means of powered gates (not visible) which are adjustable by means ol' electric motor actuated screw-threaded drives, An endless conveyor belt 24 is located beneath the ouflets of the compartments of the hopper 16 and is adapted to transport material discharged from the compartments of the hopper 16 towards the mxing/discharge auger conveyor 12. The conveyor also passes beneath the further hopper 20 and is adapted to receive cement discharged from the cement hopper 18 via an adjustable gate (not shown). The conveyor belt 24 is operated by an hydraulic motor 28 mounted to one side of the first hopper 16.
A water tank 28 is also located at the end of the first hopper 16 s remote from the mixing/discharge auger conveyor 12 and a pump (not shown) is adapted to feed water from the tank 28 to the mlxlng/dischar9e auger conveyor 12. The screw conveyor 22, discharge gates, conveyor belt 24, mIxing/discharge auger conveyor and water pump of each concrete mixer are under the separate control of a control panel P. As best seen in FIg. 2, each of the concrete mixers 10 is mounted on a standard ISO frame 30 of the same size as a conventional ISO container. In particular, each frame 30 comprises four elongate longitudinal frame members 32 and a plurality of transverse cross-members 34 interconnecting the longitudinal frame members 32. Hopper is mounting pads 38 are located at the intersection of the longitudinal and transverse cross-members 32, 34 in the region intended to support the first hopper 16. A supporting frame 38 is also provided for the water tank 28.
Each concrete mixer 10 is mounted on its respective support frame 30 and is lifted into position on a railway wagon W (Fig. 3). The lifting of each mixer and support frame, and the secure location and mounting of the frame 30 on the railway wagon is facilitated by standard corner units for receipt of *twistlock fasteners of the type commonly used for standard ISO containers. The discharge turret 14, mounted on a turret support frame 42 which is mounted on the frame 30 of each of the two concrete mixers, is then located between the mixing/discharge auger conveyors 12 of the two concrete mixers. The discharge turret 14 is in turn connected to a final discharge chute 44 which can pivot either side of the mixer, through a range of approximately 270°. The railway wagon W is then connected to a locomotive, either directly or via one or more additional wagons.
The concrete mixers 10, the railway wagon W on which it is mounted and all of the other components are engineered to withstand forces which would be generated during an impact, in accordance with rail industry requirements.
In use, the compartments of the first hopper 16 are filled with sand and aggregate, the second hoper 20 and the tank 19 is filled with water.
The railway wagon W carrying the mixing apparatus is then taken to the is location on the track where concrete is required, One or both control panels P is then operated to control the screw conveyors 22, discharge gates, conveyor belt 24 and water pump in order to define the desired relative amounts of sand, cement, aggregate and water In the concrete mix. These are then fed to the appropriate auger conveyor 12, which Is operated in order to mix the components thoroughly and feed them to the discharge turret 14, by which time they have formed a flowable concrete mix of the desired constituents. The concrete fed to the discharge turret may then be discharged to either side of the track via the final discharge chute 44. FIg. 3 shows several different possible positions for the height of the discharge chute 44, but it should be noted that the discharge chute 44 can also be pivoted to extend forwardly and rearwardly. The two concrete mixers 10 can be operated separat&y or, if a greater volume of concrete is reqthred, simultaneously, The two concreLe mixers can be S operated independenfly of one another, which thereby stifi aVows product of concrete if one of the concrete mixers 10 is defective.
The invenflon is not restricted to the detaUs of the foregoing embodiment. For example, although the mixing apparatus has been described as for use with a railway (railroad) wagon, it is So applicable to being used with other forms of transport such as a lorry (truck), for example, or for static use as a batching plant loading traditional ready**rrdx concrete lorries (trucks). Moreover, although the invention has been described with reference to mixing of concrete, it is also applicable to the mixing of other mulficomponent flowable materials.
Moreover, an additional mixer may be located between the discharge turret 14 and the discharge chute 44 to aVow the introduction of additional components to the final mix.
Furthermore, afthough the embodiment as described refers only to a single control panel P for each concrete mixer 10, there may be a control panel P on each side of each concrete mixer 10, to facilitate operation and delivery of mixed product to both sides. Alternatively, the control panel P for each concrete mixer 10 may be located centrally, for the same purpose. Each control panel P has been described as controlling only its associated concrete mixer 10. However, one or more (possibly all) of the controt panels P may be arranged to control both concrete mixers 10, if desired.
