Abstract

A trolley includes an articulated linkage mechanism 2, 3 for raising and lowering to the ground a platform 1 relative to a frame 7 and wheels 4. The leading edge of the platform 1 may include an insignificant lip which may touch the ground in the lowered attitude. The platform may remain essentially level between the raised and lowered attitudes and hence a load may be transported without excessive tilting. A handle 2 may be used to raise and lower the platform and to pull the trolley. Castors may be provided on the trolley fixed to the frame 7 or the platform 1.

Description

AN ADAPTABLE PLATFORM AND TRANSPORTER INCORPORATING
LINKAGE FOR LIFTING & LOWERING THE PLATFORM
Background
There are difficulties in lifting heavy items off the ground and transporting them if there is a need to keep the item upright at all times. A very obvious example is a large bin without a cover that contains liquid but some electrical items, refrigeration devices, loose assemblies of components or tall ungainly pieces of equipment are other examples of heavy or awkward items that may need to remain upright during removal from one location to another.
Current practice for moving heavy items on wheels by hand is typically to use either a flat-bed truck, a heavy-duty sack barrow, a cargo truck, a wheeled dolly or an extendable trolley. In none of these examples can the combination of lifting and moving be achieved without lifting the item by some other means or by tilting the item. For lifting a heavy item from the ground and transporting that item then the heavy-duty sack barrow such as has been seen commonly on railway stations can be used. But it has to be tilted to move bring the heavy item off the ground and to allow the wheels free movement.
This invention combines the lifting of a heavy item with its transportation without extensive tilting nor with any need of cranage that would involve supporting the item in ways other than it be free-standing on a firm base.
Description
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying diagrams in which: Figure 1 shows the assembled view of a means of lowering the platform Figure 2 details the construction of the means of raising the platform
Detailed Description -
Figure 1 shows the trolley in the lowered position with the platform leading edge, 1, on the ground brought about by the actuating and towing handle, 2, moved about the pivot pin, 6, into the vertical position. This moves the lower arm of the wheel link lever, 3, abut pivot pin, 5, and, in so doing, raises the wheels, 4 to allow the platform, I, to drop.
In Figure 2 the view shows the actuating and towing handle, 2, moved about pivot pin, 6, into the transporting position and, in so doing, has moved the lower arm of the bell-crank lever, 3, clockwise about pivot pin 5, to lower the wheels, 4, and raise the platform, 1.
The castor wheel, 8, is attached to and supports the frame, 7, but not exclusively as it could be fixed alternatively to the platform, 1 and the operation of the invention

Claims (6)

  1. AN ADAPTABLE PLATFORM AND TRANSPORTER INCORPORATINGLINKAGE FOR LIFTING & LOWERING THE PLATFORM Claims 1. A trolley with a platform supported on wheels through articulated links on a sub-frame such that it incorporates the means of lowering and tilting its platform to the ground or other similar flat surface.
  2. 2. A means of allowing a heavy item to be manoeuvred onto a lowered platform as in claim 1 across an insignificant lip on the leading edge of the platform.
  3. 3. A means of raising the platfonn following the loading of the heavy item as in claim land 2.
  4. 4. A means of transporting a loaded item according to claim 1, 2 and 3 so that it can remain and be relocated in the same relative attitude as in the original location.
  5. 5. A means of lowering the platform with its leading edge touching the ground or other similar flat surface according to claim 1.
  6. 6. A means of allowing a transported heavy item as in claim 1 to 5 to be manoeuvred off the lowered platform across an insignificant lip on the leading edge of the platform onto the ground or similar flat surface.
