Description
Back seat assembly for a motor vehicle The invention relates to a back seat assembly for a motor vehicle, with at least one adjustable backrest part which is lockable with respect to a body part of the motor vehicle by means of a locking device, To increase passenger comfort, it is desirable to provide adjustability for backrests of motor vehicle seats, in particular rear seats. While such backrests are usually movable, for example to provide an increased cargo space in the vehicle's rear, most means for moving respectively locking the backrest part are not practical for an infinitely variable adjustment of the backrest inclination.
Known mechanism usually include a pivot for moving the backrest part and a locking device used to lock the backrest part in place at a given inclination. Since the pivot as well as the locking device are each fixed relatively to a body part of the vehicle, such a rear seat assembly only allows locking the backrest in a fixed seating position, in which further adjustment of the backrest inclination is not possible A more versatile mechanism is known from WO 2006/079 300 A2 To allow the adjustment of backrest indication, a guide rail is mounted on the back surface of the backrest part and coupled to a pivotally mounted bar, which can be locked in any position within the guide rail. Such a construction, however, requires a significant amount of installation space to allow for a full movement of the backrest part to its stowing position.
The primary objective of the present invention is thereforto provide a back seat assembly of the aforementioned kind which is particularly compact as well as easy and safe to use and provides adjustability in infinitesimal steps.
A back seat assembly according to claim 1 fulfills this purpose by fixating the back rest part of the back seat assembly by means of a movable locking device which can be reversibly uncoupled from the backrest part. Moving the locking device allows for adjustment of the back rest inclination. Since the locking device can be uncoupled from the back rest part, its movement range does not need to extend so far as to allow a complete movement of the back rest part into a stowing position, in which it is completely folded toward a seat cushion part of the rear seat assembly. The moving parts of such a back seat assembly can therefore be constructed in a very compact manner which increases cargo space in a luggage area behind the back seat assembly and lowers the gross weight of the assembly.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention,in a first state, the backrest part is coupled to an actuator device connected to a back side of the backrest via the locking device and is pivotally movable in a first angle range relative to a seat cushion pad by means of said actuator device. In a second state, the back rest part is pivotally movable in a second angle range relative to the seat cushion part exceeding the first angle range. The first state thereby represents the seating position of the back rest assembly, in which the adjustment range of the back rest part is restricted to angles between backrest and cushion which are comfortable for passengers. Within the first angle range, the inclination of the back rest part is infinitely variable, so that a passenger can always chose the position most comfortable to him by using the electrical pneumatic or otherwise driven actuator device.
The second state allows for stowing the back rest part and can be reached by uncoupling the locking device. Here, an infinitely variable adjustment is not necessary, so the desired function can be reached by much simpler means, thereby saving weight and space.
Preferably, the first angle range contains angles between the backrest part and the seat cushion part of more than 90°. Designing the locking and actuator devices for angles smaller than 900 is generally not necessary, as such angles of backrest inclination are not deemed comfortable by a majority of passengers.
Further, the second angle range contains angles between the backrest part and the seat cushion part of less than 90°. This covers all backrest inclinations that need to be traversed when folding the backrest part into its stowing position.
In a further preferred embodiment of the invention, the actuator device comprises an extendible rod element for pivotally moving the backrest part, said rod element being connected to the locking device. This allows for a particularly simple mechanical construction of the rear seat assembly, as the actuator only needs to be designed for linear translational movement to enact the desired rotational movement of the backrest pa rt.
In another preferred embodiment of the invention, a pivot between the back rest part and the seat cushion part comprises a trigger element designed to generate a signal to the actuator device to retract the rod element when the angle between the backrest part and the seat cushion part falls below a given value.
In other words, the trigger element is actuated during the folding of the backrest part into its stowing position. At this point, the rod element automatically returns to a safe retracted position, thereby freeing room in the luggage compartment and reducing the risk of injury for a person stowing cargo or operating the backrest part.
As a particularly simple and reliable trigger element, a cam may be used, thus allowing for simple mechanical triggering of the rod element retraction.
Preferably, the trigger device generates the signal at an angle between the backrest part and seat cushion pad of about 45°. At this point of the backrest part's rotational movement, it can safely be assumed that stowing it in its stowing position is indeed intended1 so that an accidental or unnecessary retraction of the rod element can be avoided.
** . It is furthermore advantageous, when in the fully extended position of the rod element, the : angle between the backrest part and seat cushion part is about 90°. The maximum extension of the rod element thus coincides with the minimum backrest inclination angle in the seating position of the back seat assembly.
The invention and its details will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 shows a schematic representation of a backseat assembly according to the present invention, Fig. 2 a)-d) show the backseat assembly according to fig. I in various stages of inclination, Fig. 3 shows a detailed view of an actuator mechanism for a backseat assembly according to fig. 1 and Fig. 4 a)-b) show detailed views of a pivot assembly for a backrest assembly according to fig, 1 A backrest assembly 10 for a motor vehicle comprises backrest parts 12 and 14, which extend over two third! and one third of the lateral width of the backrest assembly 10 respectively. Each backrest part 12, 14 carries at least one headrest 16 and is pivotally rotatable with respect to a car body part not shown in the figure by means of a pivot assembly 18 connected to an axis 20 of the backrest part 12, 14 In order to allow for an automated mechanical adjustment of backrest inclination, actuator devices 22 connect to the backrest parts 12, 14 via locking devices 24. Said locking devices hold the backrest parts 12, 14 in a fixed position while coupled to the backrest parts 12, 14 and locked. The actuator devices 22 further comprise of a retractable rod element 26, the translational motion of which can enact a rotational motion of the backrest parts 12, 14 around the axis 20 when actuated, as well as a connecting rod 27 connecting the actuator devices to the vehicle body.
In order to allow for a transition of the backrest assembly 10 from a seating position into a stowing position, in which the backrest parts 12, 14 are folded towards the cushion parts 28, which are not shown in fig. 1, the locking devices 24 can be decoupled from the S backrest parts. Detailed views over the whole range of motion of the backseat assembly lOareshowninfig.2a)d) * S. Fig. 2a) depicts the backrest assembly 10 with its backseat parts 12, 14 in their most reclined state. In this state, the rod element 26 is fully retracted. To move the backrest parts 12, 14 into a more upright position, the actuator device 22 is activated and the rod element 26 extended, which translates into a rotational motion of the backrest parts 12, 14 around their respective pivot assemblies 18. The most upright position of the backrest parts 12, 14, as depicted in fig. 2b), is reached at full extension of the rod element 26. In this state, the angel between backrest part 12, 14 and seat cushion part 28 is around 900.
To enable further movement of the backrest parts 12, 14 towards the seat cushion parts 28, the actuator device needs to be decoupled from the backseat parts by unlocking the locking device 24. This facilitates free movement of the backrest parts 12, 14 and can be accomplished by pressing a button 30 located in the luggage compartment of the motor vehicle. The signal generated by pressing button 30 activates a unlatching mechanism within the locking device 24.
Moving the backrest parts 12, 14 manually towards the seat cushion parts 28 at first leaves the rod element 26 in its fully extended position. Upon reaching the position shown in fig. 2c), a cam mechanism 31 within the pivot assembly 18 triggers a signal which is transmitted via an electrical connection 32 to the actuator device 22 and in turn triggers the retraction of the rod element 26 into a safe storage position, as depicted in fig. 2d), which also shows the backrest pads 12, 14 completely folded into their stowing position.
As an alternative to an electrically driven system, pneumatic or Bowden connectors can be employed. * . * * ** * * * * ** * . . **** *.e * **. *. * * * *
