Abstract

A baby changer comprises a rectangular padded base section 4 and further comprises four foldable flaps 1, 1a, 2, 2a located on each edge of the base. Opposing flaps are releasably attachable to each other to i) secure the lower surface of the base to the lap of a parent or other caregiver, and ii) secure a child to the upper surface of base. The changer may be made of a flexible material such as cotton, plastic or PVC and may include a removable padded insert 8. The flaps securing the child to the base preferably extend from one end of the base to a point sufficiently distant from the other end of the base to provide a free head region. The child restraint flaps adjacent the foot portion of the base may be connected to the base using releasable means 5 to allow access to change the babys nappy.

Description

Lap Baby Changer
Description
The Lap Baby Changer is, a baby changer which you place on your lap (Figure 4), and you are able to change your baby securely. It was born out of the idea of having the change a child on my lap and making sure they are securely there and not going to fall down if they wriggled. The changer secures them like a swaddling cloth, and the child is comfortable and happy. Also, there are times when you visit a friend's and you wanted to go to their bathroom, to change your child. The toilet is what you could sit on and with the Lap baby changer, because you can take it anywhere with you, you take it out assemble it quickly by placing the baby onto the centre padded rectangle (4), and you place the baby folds (2 & 2A)' around them, and secure it with the Velcro (3A & 3C). Baby Side 2 can be folded backwards, to make changer smaller to fit the size of the child; also baby side 2A can be tucked underneath changer (close to guardians body) to make it a more snug fit. Then you secure the side folds' (1 & 1A), around your thighs and securing it underneath your thighs by connecting the Velcro strips (3& 3B) underneath your thighs. This leaves you the vision of the baby's bottom at the end of centre padded rectangle (4), and you are free to change the baby securely.
The Lap Baby Changer can be used anywhere where a mother/guardian can sit down; this could be in the park, at home on the sofa, in the kitchen on a chair, it can also be placed on a table/hard surface, to change a baby on, just like a traditional changer.
The mobility of the Lab Baby Changer' is what makes it different, from other baby changers as well as its flexibility: being made mostly of material, and not having to place it on a hard surface to use or to hook it up to something like the sink to use. When you finish with the lap baby changer, you can roll it up and take it where ever you go.
The Lap Baby Changer secures the child in place, with the baby folds, and secures the child on the parent/guardian through the lap folds. Its size can vary.
At the back of the Lap Baby Changer is a slot (7A), which opens up to a pocket where a, a piece of eco-friendly PVC foam (8) can be slotted in, to make centre of the changer (4), padded and very comfortable for the baby to lie on. The flap (7) is then placed inside the slot and held with some Velcro or a zip, to keep it securely in place. The foam can then be taken out and Lap Baby Changer placed in the washing machine and washed. The PVC foam also has air bubbles which slightly compress as the foam accepts the shape of the child to make the changer more comfortable for them; the air bubbles are refilled when the child is taken off the changer.
Buttons (5)-At the left side of centre padded rectangle are four buttons; a mother can undo the buttons as wished to gain better access (babies heights differ and they grow) to the baby's bottom. On the baby folds' (2 & 2A), are the button holes (5) in which the buttons can be securely placed. The button can also be replaced with a zip or hooks which, will have the same function.
A well as the button at the other side of the centre padded rectangle the baby folds (2 &2A), are a few centimetres away from the corner of the rectangle. This is to allow space for the baby's head to be placed freely, before the baby folds go on top of him or her.
The Lap Baby Changer is made out of material, for example, Mole Skin Cotton/Cotton Drill Cotton, and it has been sewn into the shape of the changer. There are 5 rectangular sections (1, 1A, 2, 2A, 4), all four sides have pieces of Velcro on them and a piece of foam (8) which fits into the back slot, and acts as padding, comfort for the baby.
Does have other uses, it can be used to help secure a child in place, when giving them some medicines, stops them wriggling away and when cleaning their blocked noses, is also another example. This will help prevent the endless distress of having to hold a child to give them their medicine; less distress for the child and the same for the parent. The Lap Baby Changer can be used right until potty training is successful and can be used for other purposes (as mentioned in this paragraph) after.
