Chewing-preparations; coatings for medicines. - Tablets of chewing-gum are coated with a layer of sugar containing yellow phenolphthalein to act as a laxative, and with one or more outer non-medicated layers of sugar. The tablets are preferably made from a mixture of chicle, chicle substitute (stearin, beeswax, paraffin wax, resinous materials, &c.), glucose, sugar, and cuttings from a previous batch of chewing-gum. Flavourings and a small proportion of phenolphthalien may be added to the mass, which is cooked, kneaded with powdered sugar, and cut into tablets. The tablets are coated by tumbling in a revolving pan with a mixture of coarse powdered sugar and syrup. Finely-powdered phenolphthalein is sifted into the pan whilst the tablets are still moist so that it adheres to the tablets, which are then dried by an air blast, removed from the pan, allowed to dry for a further period, and again coated with one or more layers of sugar by treatment in a revolving tumbling pan with a plain syrup. An air blast is applied during the final coating operations. The syrup for the preliminary coating may contain glucose and gum arabic in addition to sugar, and corn starch may be added to the powdered sugar used at this stage. The yellow phenolphthalein used is a finely-divided yellowish product obtained in the manufacture of phenolphthalein before the usual decolorization by charcoal and final crystallization.
