Abstract
A chewing gum base made from beeswax and pine rosin, which are fully biodegradable, renewable ingredients. When combined, they form a non stick, flavoursome, long-lasting chewing gum base. Small chunks of solid beeswax may be combined with the pine rosin in the ration 2:1, before being heated in a metal vessel half submerged in boiling water. The mixture is stirred as it melts forming a smooth, uniform, semi-viscous liquid which is then slowly cooled, moulded and coated in a flavouring.
Description
Biodegradeable, Non-stick Chewing Gum Base This invention relates to a
new type of chewing gum base made from natural, renewable ingredients instead of petroleum products.
Background: Commercially produced synthetic chewing gums are a popular but environmentally damaging product. The gum bases, made from petrochemicals, bond well with asphalt, making gum removal from pavements and roads energy-wasteful and expensive. The UK government estimates 150 million pounds is spent annually on chewing gum removal.
This invention proposes a chewing gum base made from beeswax and pine rosin.
Advantages: Beeswax and pine rosin are fully renewable, biodegradeable ingredients. Tests show a gum base made from combining them hardens quickly after chewing and does not stick well to tarmac or other surfaces.
Pine rosin has a strong natural flavour which, being an intrinsic component of the gum base, lasts longer than the soluble flavourings used in synthetic chewing gums. This flavour has been popular, for example in Greek retsina wine, for thousands of years. Beeswax and pine rosin are both produced in the UK hence costly and environmentally damaging transportation can be avoided.
Detailed description: Small chunks of solid beeswax and pine rosin are mixed together in a ratio of 2:1. The mixture is placed in a metal vessel which is half-submerged in boiling water. The beeswax/rosin mixture is stirred as it melts, forming a smooth, uniform semi-viscous liquid, which is then slowly cooled. When the liquid has thickened enough, it is moulded into pieces of the desired shape and size, which are left to cool and harden.
A flavoured coating can be added at this stage. The resulting chewing gum retains its pleasing consistency and pine-resin flavour for several hours of chewing. Claim
