Rising barrel and cylindrical hinges.-Means for handling tubing, sucker rods &c. in wells comprises a body A and a gate B pivoted to the body at b. At the hinge, means are provided for lifting the gate at the beginning of the opening movement and for lowering it at the end of such movement; such means may comprise a roller 30, Fig. 1, on the gate co-operating with a cam 31 with inclined sides 31<c> on the body, or a rotating square member or a cut away member 37, Fig. 6, co-operating with a verticalsided cam 36, or engaging rotating square members carried by the body and gate respectively, or the hinge pin may be fixed to the gate and provided with a helical groove engaging a ball carried by the body.
