Making expanded metal.-A machine for expanding pre-slotted metal sheets, particularly for forming metal laths of the herring bone typeshown in Fig. 9, comprises a die member at the edge of a table top, a ribbed expanding drum rotating near the die and a carrier operating over the table top for supporting a sheet and advancing it to the drum. The feed table B has a feed bar 14 of angle iron mounted on parallel links 15, and the slit metal sheet S to be expanded is supported on the table in an angular position by a groove 23 in a plate 19 carried by the feed bar 14, which is actuated to move the edge of the metal sheet into contact with the ribbed drum F by means of a handle extension 18 of one of the links. The pressure bar D above the die block C is pivoted in the frame brackets E so that it may be tilted out of the way whilst the sheet is placed in position. Stop plates 25 prevent the pressure bar D from being forced out against the drum. The frictional resistance to the! feed of the metal sheet between the pressure bar E and die C is less than the force exerted by the teeth 2 of the drum so that longitudinal movement of the sheet relative to the drum is permitted during the expansion of the slits. The drum is rotated from a mainshaft 7 through gearing 4, 5, 6 by a one-revolution clutch 9, which is automatically disengaged by a trip lever 10 and detent x and reengaged by a hand lever 12.
