Abstract

The invention relates to a method for warning a driver of a motor vehicle during a driving manoeuvre in which an activation of a direction indicator is required. The method comprises a step in which the driving situation of the motor vehicle is monitored by monitoring at least one driving-situation-relevant parameter. In a further step, the at least one driving-situation-relevant parameter is evaluated and on the basis thereof a check is made to establish whether there is a driving situation which requires an activated direction indicator. In a further step, an activity signal of a direction indicator is evaluated. If there is a driving situation which requires an activated direction indicator, and the activity signal indicates an inactive state of the direction indicator, a warning is triggered to the driver.

Description

Description Title
Method and device for warning a driver of motor vehicle
Prior art
The invention relates to a method-for warning a driver of a motor vehicle which indicates to the driver an inactivity of a direction indicator if there is a driving situation which requires an activated direction indicator. The invention further relates to a device by means of which the method for warning a driver of a motor vehicle is carried out.
From DE 198 44 220 Al there is known an indicating element which indicatea an actuation of direction indicators of a motor vehicle and can also serve to assist the driver of the motor vehicle during a parking procedure. In this case, an illuminating area of the indicating element can be actuated, for example in a flashing manner. Furthermore, the area of the indicating element can be actuated in such a manner that only a partial area of the indicating element, xunning through the indicating element, is illuminated. The indicating element may also be illuminated in different colours. The various possibilities for illuminating the indicating element are used to convey a warning or an indication to a driver regarding the present driving situation. For example, this may be a distance warning, or in conjunction with a parking space searching assistant, anindication of the. side of the motor vehicle on which a suitable parking space is situated.
DE1O2 57 722 Al discloses a parking aid for a vehicle which detects a parking space when passing by. En this case, characteristics of the parking spaces, for example length and width, are determined, stored in a memory and output by means of an output unit. The parking aid can be activated when the vehicle speed falls below a predetermined value. The vehicle is equipped with distance sensors which may take the form of ultrasonic sensors which detecLt a parking space. Measured data of the distance sensors are utilised and the characteristics of the parking space determined by means of an evaluation unit. If the parking aid detects the initiation of a procedure of parking in a parking space, the information regarding the parking space is indicated to the driver on an output unit.
The initiation of a parking procedure is detected,, for example, when the driving speed falls below a predetermined value and/or a flashing direction indicator is activated.
Disclosure of the invention
The method according to the invention for warning a driver of a motor vehicle during a driving manoeuvre in which an activation of a direction indicator is required comprises the following steps: 25, a) monitoring the driving situation of the motor vehicle, with at least one driving-situation-relevant parameter being monitored, b) evaluating the at least one driving-situation-relevant parameter and checking whether there is a driving situation which requires an activated directibn indicator, , c) evaluation of an activity signal of a direction indicator and triggering of a warning to the driver if the activity signal of the direction indicator indicates an inactive state and if there is a driving situation which requires an activated direction indicator.
The method according to the invention makes it possible to detect whether a driver has activated a direction indicator if the driving situation requires this. To detect a driving situation which requires an activation of a direction indicator, at least one driving-situation-relevant parameter is monitored. A driving-situation-relevant 1 parameter here is a variable, in particular a driving-dynamics variable of the motor vehicle, from which the nature of a driving situation can be inferred. [n the case of an inactive state of the direction indicator, a warning is issued to the driver in order to point out this fact.
The driver is allowed to make up for the failure to activate the direction indicator, and thus prevent a dangerous driving situation from arising. The method according to the invention thereby increases the road traffic safety.
In one embodiment of the £nvention, the warning which is output to the driver can be deactivated again if the driving-situation-relevant parameter indicates that there is no longer a driving situation which requires an activated direction indicator. This avoids the situation where the driver in a driving situation focuses his or her attention on determining the cause of the warning signal and in doing so neglects to follow the further driving situation. The deactivation of the, warning signal, if the driving-situation-relevant parameter iñicates that there is no longer a driving situation which requires an activated direction indicator, improves the road traffic S safety.
Furthermore, in one embodiment of the invention, the warning to the driver cab be deactivated if the activity signal of the direction indicator indicates a transition from an inactive to an active state. The method according to the invention thus detects if the driver, in the driving situation which requires an activated direction indicator, has perceived the warning and reacted in accordance with the warning. By deactivation of the warning, the driver's attention is no longer occupied by the warning and the driver is relieved. The road traffic safety is thereby increased.
In a further embodiment of the invention, at least one of the following variables can be used as the at least one driving-situation-relevant parameter: A driving speed of the motor vehicle, a brake pressure, an accelerator-pedal position, a gradient of the driving speed of the motor vehicle with respect to time, a gradient of the brake pressure with respect to time, a gradient of the accelerator-pedal position with respect to time, or informationof a driving assistance system. In this case, the driving speed of the vehicle, the brake pressure or the accelerator-pedal position characterise the present driving state of the motor vehicle. The gradient of the driving speed with respect to time, the gradient of the brake pressure with respect to time, the gradient of the accelerator-pedal position with respect to time or the information of the driving assistance system characterise a driving manoeuvre intended or initiated by the driver. In addition, a steer angle of the steering wheel can serve as a driving-situation-relevant parameter.
In one embodiment of the invention, a combination of a plurality of the afnrementicned variables and/or further driving-situation-relevant parameters is used to evaluate whether there is a driving situation which requires art activated direction indicator. If a combination of a variable which characterises the driving state and a variable which characterises a driving manoeuvre intended or initiated by the driver is used, a comparison of the variables enables a reliable evaluatioi-i of the driving situation. The reliable evaluation of the driving situation makes it possible to avoid output of an incorrect warning in driving situations which do not require an activated direction indicator. The driver's attention is not occupied by incorrect warnings, thereby increasing the road traffic 29 safety.
Furthermore, in the method for warning.a driver of a motor vehicle, therecan be a driving situation which requires an activated direction indicator if a driving-situation-relevant parameter exceeds an-upper limit value or a driving-situation-relevant parameter falls below a lower limit value. A driving situation which represents a transition between two operating modes of a motor vehicle can be characterised by a driving-situation-relevant parameter which exceeds or falls below a limit value. Thus, for example, before a turning procedute at an intersection, the driving speed of the motor vehicle falls to a low value, which ensures that the turning procedure is performed safely. The fact that the driving speed of the motor vehicle falls below the loi,ier limit value int this case shows that the turning procedure is imminent and an * activated direction indicator is required. The fact that a * 5 driving-situation-relevant parameter respectively exceeds or falls below an upper or lower limit value in this case reliably indicates a progression of the driving situation.
As a result, the warning can be output to the driver in good time.
In a further embodiment of the invention, in step c) the activity signal of the direction indicator, the activation of which possesses the most appropriate warning effect for other road users owing to the driving situation, is evaluated. In this case, the driver is warned if, in the present driving situation, the direction indicator is not activated which supplies other road users with correct information about the driving manoeuvre intended or initiated by the driver. The method for warning a driver of a motor vehicle is thereby adapted to the requirements of the traffic situation, and avoids warnings which are incorrect and perceived as superfluous by the driver. If a warning is frequently output to a driver which the driver perceives as superfluous, the latter tends to class the corresponding system as faulty and unreliable, and to ignore it. The safety-increasing effect of such a system is thereby lost. The method for warning a driver of a motor vehicle counteracts this disadvantage.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the information of a driving assistance system is an indication indicating the detection of a parking space suitable for the motor * vehicle, or an indication indicating the initiafion of an * 7 automatic parking manoeuvre, or an indication indicating an output of steering direction instructions to the driver.
The method for warning a driver in this case resorts to an indication indicating that a driving manoeuvre is imminent and requires the driver to indicate, to other road users by an activated direction indicatot, the intention to perform the driving manoeuvre. The niethdd for warning a driver in this case resorts to information originating from a driving assistance system which likewise evaluates the driving situation or is capable of monitoring the driving situation. The method for warning a driver is integrated in a connected system of aids for a driver. It is thereby enured that the method for warning a driver behaves consistently with the connected system of aids. BehavioUr of the method perceived to be inconsistent by the driver is prevented. As a result, the tendency of the driver to class the method for warning a driver as unreliable and to ignore it is counteracted.
In this case, furthermore the activity signal of the direction indicator located on the side of the motor -vehicle facing the parking space can be evaluated. The method for warning a driver in this caseoutputs a warning if the driver, on initiating a parking manoeuvre, has not activated the direction indidator which signals to other road users that parking in this paking space is intended.
This embodiment of the invention is adapted to the requirements of the road traffic and to the tendency of drivers by mistake not to activate the correct direction indicator during parking inanoeuvres. The invention thus has a high degree of practicality and increases the road traffic safety in a frequently occurring driving situation.
In a further embodiment of the invention, in step b) there is a driving situation which requires an activated direction indicator if a driving assistance system indicates a detection of a suitable parking space and a driving-situation-relevant parameter indicates a reduction *of the driving speed. A combination of an indidation cf a-suitable parking space with immediately following reduction of the driving speed allows in step c) the driving situation to be evaluated to the effect that the -driver intends to park in precisely the parking space which the driving assistance system has detected. In this case, a parking manoeuvre is imminent. Any other driving-situation-relevant parameters can then be ignored, even if they indicate another driving situation. In drivin situations in which different driving-situation-relevant parameters result in contradictory evaluations of the driving situation, the method for warning a driver can thus give priority to certain driving-situation-relevant parameters in a frequently occurring driving situation. The ability of the method according to the invention to evaluate a traffic situation is thereby improved and speeded up.
Furthermore, in the method for warning a driver, in step c) the warning can comprise at least a visual warning, an acoustic warning, a haptic warning or a periodic automatic actuation of the brake. A visual or acoustic warning can be realised, for example, ia an illumination of a warning lamp or an output of a warning sound by means of warning lamps or loudspeakers, which are also utilised by other systems of the motor vehicle and are already present. The method according to the invention can be realised without additional components and efficiently implemented. During the output of a baptic warning, the driver's attention is focused on the driving situation. In doing so,. the driver's sense of sight and hearing are used primarily. A haptic warning activates, with the driver's sense of touch, a sense which is secondary for observation of the driving situation. A haptic warning thus distracts the driver only minimally from the driving situation, thereby increasing the road traffic safety. An automatic actuation of a brake results in the motor vehicle displaying as a warning unsteady handling perceived by the driver as jo1ting Unsteady handling is perceived immediately by the driver and urges the latter to comply with the warning immediately. This increases the effectiveness of the warning, thereby conveying to the driver an increased urgency to activate the direction indicator in dangerous driving situation. The road traffic safety is thereby improved.
In addition, the haptic warning can take the form of vibration of a steering wheel or a control lever of the.
direction indicator. If the haptic warning takes place by a vibration of the steering wheel, this results in immediate effectiveness, since the driver always touches the steering wheel with one hand. In this case, a vibration of the steering wheel is perceived as unpleasant by the driver, with the result that the driver's attention is immediaLely focused on remedying the cause of the warning. If the haptic warning of the driver takes place via a vibration of the control lever of the direction indicator, this gives the driver obvious feedback about the cause of the warning,-and how to remedy it. The effectiveness of the method for warning a driver is thereby improved and the road traffic safety increased.
In a further embodiment of the invention, the steps a) to c) are repeated if, after step c} , an allowed period of time elapses or an allowed distance is covered without a transition of the activity signal of the direction indicator from inactive to active taking place. This involves detecting whether the driver reacts to the output warning within a period of time. If the driver does not react, the warning is repeated. In this case, with repeated performance of the step c) a warning can be output to the driver which has an increased intensity cornpared.with the preceding warning. It is thereby conveyed to the driver that the present driving situation has increasing inherent danger potential if the direction indicator is not activated. In this case, an increasing urgency to activate the direction indicator can be immediately signalled to the driver. The method according to the invention is thus adapted to the requirements of the road traffic.
The method is carried out by means of a device which comprises a control unit which is connected to sensors for detecting driving-situation-relevant parameters and an activity signal of a direction indicator, and is equipped with a connection for controlling a warning device, and has a register array and an arithmetic-logic unit for evaluating at least one driving-situation-relevant parameter. Furthermore, the device for warning a driver can be designed in such a manner that the control unit takes the form of software. In this case, the control unit can be formed in a further control unit of the motor vehicle. As a result, the device according to the invention can be of compact form and advantageously integrated in software for operating aids of a motor vehicle. This allows adaptation of the device to the requirethents of the assistance systems of a motor vehicle, with which the device according to the invention cooperates when in operation.
Brief description of the drawings 5.
The invention is illustrated with the aid of the present figures, in: which Figure 1 shows a flow charf. of the method according to the invention in a first embodiment Figure 2 shows a flow chart of the method according to the invention in a second embodiment Embodiments of the invention The method for warning a driver of a motor vehicle * . according to Figure 1 comprises a monitoring step 110, a comparing step 120, a checking step 130, a warning step140 and a return 180. In the monitoring step 110, the step a) of the method for warning a driver of a motor vehicle is carried out. This involves monitorinq*the present driving situation using at least one driving-situation-relevant parameter. For this purpose, information is read out and acquired by sensors. In the comparing step 120, the at least one driving-situation-relevant parameter is compared with an upper and a lower limit value. This involves monitoring whether the driving-situation-relevant parameter respectively exceeds or falls below an upper or lower limit value. Based on whether the parameter respectively exceeds or falls below the upper or lower limit value, it is determined whether there is a driving situation which requires an activated direction indicator. If there is no driving situation which requires an activated direction indicator, the method i.s continued in the monitoring step 110. If there is a driving situation which requires an activated direction indicator, the method is continued with the checking step 130. In the checking step 130, a check is made to establish whether a direction indicator is activated. For this purpose, an activity signal of a direction indicator is evaluated to establish whether the activity signal indicates an active or inactive state. If the activity signal indicates an active state of the direction indicator, th method is continued with the monitoring step 110. If the activity signal indicates an inactive state of the direction indicator, the method is * continued with the warning step 140. In the warning step 140, a triggering of a warning to the driver takes place.
In this case, the comparing step 120, the checking step 130 and the warning step 140 correspond to the steps b) and c) of the method accQrding to the invention. The warning can be a visual, an acoustic, a haptic warning or a periodic automatic actuation of a brake of the motor vehicle. The warning step 140 can be followed by a return 180. The return 180 resets the Method to the monitoring step 110. As a result, the method can be repeated as often as desired.
A second embodiment of the method according to the invention comprises a monitoring step 110, a comparing step 120, a first checking step 130, a warning step 140, a period of time 150, a second checking step 160, an amplifying step 170 and a return 180. In the monitoring step 110, the step a) of the method for warning a driver of a motor vehicle is carried out. This involves monitoring the present driving situation using at least one driving- -situation-relevant parameter. For this purpose, information is read out and acquired by sensors In the comparing step 120, the at least one driving-situation-relevant parameter is compared with an upper and a lower limit value. This involves monitoring whether the d.riving-situatin-relevant parameter respectively exceeds or falls below an upper or lower limit value. Based on whether the parameter respectively exceeds or falls below the upper or lower limit value, it is determined whether there is a driving situation which requires an activated direction indicator.
If there is no driving situation which requires an activated direction indicator, the method is continued in the monitoring step 110. If there is a driving situation which requires an activated direction indicator, the method is continued with the first checking step 130.
In the first checking step 130, a check is made to establish whether a direction indicator is activated. For this purpose, an activity signal of a direction indicator is evaluated to establish whether the activity signal indicates an active or inactive state. If the activity signal indicates an active state of the direction indicator, the method is continued with the monitoring step 110. If the activity signal indicates an inactive state of the direction indicator, the method is continued with the warning step 140. In the warning step 140, a triggering of a warning to the driver takes place. In this case, the comparing step 120, the checking step 130 and the warning step 140 correspond to the steps b) and c) of the method according to the invention. The warning can be a visual, an acoustic, a haptic warningor a periodic automatic actuation of a brake of the motor vehicle.
The warning step 140 is followed by a period of time 150 in which the state of the method, resulting from the warning step 140, is maintained. This is followed by a second checking step 160, in which an activity signal of a di±ecti-on indicator is checked. If the activity signal indicates an active state of the direction indicator, the method is continued in the monitoring step. If the activity signal of the direction indicator indicates an inactive state, an amplifying step 170 follows. In the amplifying step 170, the intensity of the output warning is increased.
For this purpose, in the case of a visual warning, an illuminating frequency of a warning lamp can be increased or its colour changed. In the case of an acoustic warning, the loudness and frequency of a warning sound can be increased. In the case of a haptic warning, the vibrating amplitude or vibrating frequency can be increased. If a brake is periodically automatically actuated as a warning to the dt-jver, the actuation of the brake can be intensified. The amplifying step 170 can be followed by a return 180, which returns the method to the monitoring step 110.
In a further embodiment of the method, in the warning step a first warning is triggered, and in the amplifying step 170 a second warning is triggered. In this case, the first and the second warning differ in that they activate different senses of the driver. A first warning, which may take the form of a visual warning, is followed, for example, by an acoustic warning or an autcmatic periodic actuation of a brake. Furthermore, on the triggering of the second warning, the first warning can be deactivated or both warnings can be simultaneously output.
