Abstract

249,614. Berkel & Parnall's Slicing Machine Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Thomas, H., and Quirk, E. Jan. 1, 1925. Machine cutters, grinding in situ. - A sharpener for the rotary knife of a slicing-machine and having two grinding-discs to operate upon both sides of the knife edge simultaneously, is arranged so that when the sharpener is raised bodily from the operative position, the grinding-discs are moved automatically clear of the knife in a direction laterally thereof while when lowered into the operative position, the grinding-discs are moved automatically to engage the knife. The sharpener, Figs. 1 and 3, comprises a casing having a horizontal arm 1 and an inclined arm 2 in which are slidably mounted respectively sleeves 3, 4 urged by springs towards the knife 26, and carrying spindles 5, 7 on which are mounted the grinders 6, 8. Pins 10, 12 are secured respectively to the sleeves 3, 4 and project through slots 9, 11 in the arms 1, 2. The grinders are moved away from the knife by cams 24, 25 on a shaft 13 mounted in the casing and carrying a pinion 14 in engagement with a rack control member 16, which is slidably mounted in the casing and pressed down by a spring 17. The casing is mounted on a pillar 21 slidable in a bracket 23 on the knife-bearing 70, and the upper face of the bracket has a flange in which is an aperture 37<e> and a recess 37<a>, stops 37<b>, 37<c> being provided at the sides of the flange; a pin 37 in the casing is adapted to enter the aperture 37<e> or the recess 37<a>. When the sharpener is to be moved to the inoperative position it is lifted bodily by a handle 20 on the rack 16. This action causes the pinion 14 to rotate and to move the grinders, against the spring, away from the knife. The sharpener is lifted until the pin 37 is clear of the aperture 37e and is then turned and lowered, the pin engaging in the recess 37<a>; the grinders then approach each other. To move the sharpener into the operative position, the above movements are reversed. In a modification, Fig. 5, the control member comprises a bar 34 having at its upper end a slot 35 engaging a lever 36 on the shaft 13 and at its lower end a pin 33 secured to a pin 27 rotatable in the bracket 23 but prevented from axial movements by screws 30, 31 engaging a grooved enlargement 28 on the pin. The pin is located in the pillar 21, which is hollow, and the pin 33 passes through a slot 32 in the pillar. The action is similar to that in the form first described, the extent to which the sharpener may be lowered being adjustable by a nut 38 on the pin 37 which is screwed. In a further modification the pillar 21 is solid and in place of the control member 34 a vertically slidable member is provided having at its lower end an operating knob. In a modification of the constructional form shown in Fig. 5 the hollow pillar is raised by a rotary handle 45, Fig. 10, mounted on the bracket 23 and having a pin 46 passing through a cam slot 47 in the pillar and engaging a cut-away part of the end of the pillar. Rotation of the handle 45 first lifts the pillar 21, then rotates it, and finally lowers it in the inoperative position, the control member actuating the grinders as described above. In another modification, shown in Figs. 20 and 24.the bracket 23 carries a bevel wheel 55 having thereon a cam 58 which engages a pin 60 secured to the pillar 21 and movable along a slot 61 in the bracket. The pillar carries a bevel pinion 51 supported on a flange 52 on the pillar and driven by pins 53. The shalt 13 is movable by a control member 62 slidable in the sharpener and held by a spring 67 down on the bracket 23, a lever 64 engaging an aperture 63 in the member and being connected to the shaft by a link 65 and a lever 66. On rotation of the wheel 55 by a handle 59, the cam 58 lifts the sharpener this operation causing rotation of the lever 64 and consequent movement of the grinders away from the knife. The pinion 51 then comes into contact with the bevel wheel and the sharpener is rotated to the inoperative position. Specifications 12688/07 and 7780/08 are referred to.
