Abstract

A long reach caulking gun for use in the building and construction industry, the employment of which renders the use of scaffolding, people lifting equipment, working at height regulation, risk assessments and method statements unnecessary, thus saving time and money on site. The gun may have a main body of 1, 1.5 or 2 metres long and allows corners and upper reaches of a room to be sealed from floor level.

One (1), one point five (1.5) AND Two (2) meter caulking gun.
Working as a self-employed contractor on building sites and dry wall installations the job called for air sealing* a complete building.
Air sealing involves reaching the upper most corners and edges of the room, this requires working height and the hiring scaffolding (ladders not permitted) completing risk assessments, method statements and adhering to working at height regulations. All factors are time consuming, costly and occasionally the necessary equipment is not available immediately resulting in loss of time.
On one such installation it was not possible to erect scaffolding because of previously installed services (ductwork/pipework/electricity) the outcome of which would have resulted in a week's delay in completing the work due to temporary removal of ductwork /pipework/electricity installation to enable access to complete the air sealing.
My solution to this situation and to save time and cost of future installations in similar circumstances was to design, create and model a caulking gun with a reach of two (2) meters thus negating the requirement for scaffolding, risk assessments and method statements. I trailed the model with great success resulting in passing air seal/heat loss and acoustic installation. Other lengths of one (1), one point five (1.5) were also modelled and used with success.
*jjr sealing -to completely seal the inside of a building to current regulations to prevent heat loss (energy saving), fire risk and acoustic insulation.
The unit is shown in drawing (JJCGO1) Because of its unique length the unit avoids the use of scaffolding and working at heights regulations and required risk assessments to be completed.
