Abstract
Filter bed remediation apparatus 1 comprises an auger 2, mountable for reversible axial displacement and for rotation. The auger has a channel 5 providing fluid communication from a point adjacent a first proximal end (6, Fig. 1) of a shaft 3 of the auger to a side discharge hole (7, Fig. 1) adjacent the distal end (8, Fig. 1) of the shaft. A plurality of side discharge holes may be located in the shaft of the auger, between the auger flights (4, Fig. 1). The channel may provide fluid communication to an end discharge hole (9, Fig. 3) at the distal end of the shaft. Water may be pumped through the channel so that water jets emanate from the discharge hole(s). A fluid discharge nozzle 10 can be arranged to discharge a jet of water 11 adjacent the auger, in a direction parallel to the axis of the auger. A method of remediating a filter bed may comprise interrupting the fluid flow to the filter bed, sequentially using the apparatus to redistribute and wash filter bed material in regions of the filter bed and restoring the fluid flow to the bed.
