Reaping, mowing, and harvesting machines.- The knife A is reciprocated by an arm B driven through a universal-joint mechanism C from an inclined pin D moved in a conical path by a crank D', the axis about which the crank rotates coinciding with the axis about which the cutterbar H is tilted for varying the height of cut, and the universal-joint transmission mechanism being mounted in a removable casing H<6>. The pin D fits into an inclined recess in the crank D<1>, the latter being carried by a stub shaft E driven by gearing E<1>, E<2>, a shaft F, a clutch F'. and toothed gearing G<1>. The universal-joint mechanism comprises a block C<1> rigidly connected to the arm B and provided with horizontal journals C<2> bearing in the casing H<6> and vertical journals bearing in fork arms on the pin D. The arm B is connected to the knife through a fork connection B<1>. The cutter-bar H is carried by a frame H<1> hinged on the yoke frame H<3> projecting from the casing H<6>, which is pivoted about the axis of the shaft E directly above the cutter-bar H and is connected to the tilting-lever J by an arm H<4> and connecting-rod H<5>. The casing H<6> is supported in a fixed frame P and may be removed, with the mechanism enclosed in it, on removing screwed pins Q<1>, Q<2>. In a modification the arm B passes freely through a bush in the block C<1>.
