[Class 6(iii)] A mower comprises a cutter bar 10 rigidly secured to a casing 16 rotatable on a tubular member 24 pivotally mounted on a frame 32 suspended beneath a tractor and carrying a power-conveying shaft 40 connected to the tractor power take-off, the shaft 40 being jointed to a driving shaft extending through the members 16 and 24 and connected to the reciprocating mechanism of the cutter. The frame 32 comprises a platform carrying bearings 38 for the shaft 40 which is driven, through a clutch 44, by a chain 46 from the power take-off. The frame is mounted beneath the tractor back axle and is secured by adjustable struts to the wheel housings. The tube 24 is oil-filled and communicates with an oilfilled recess 18 (Fig. 4) in the casing 16 which houses an eccentric 54 cscillating a crank 60 and thus oscillating a block on the shaft 64 to which is keyed the pitman 68 of the knife-bar 12. Both the pitman 68 and the eccentric 54 incorporate counterweights to reduce vibration. The pitman is joined to the ball head 78 on the knife-bar 12 by a pivoted thrust-block 74 and arms 76. The member 24 is pivoted to the frame 32 by pivot pins 34 so that the cutting-mechanism can be raised about a transverse axis by a cable 82 and hand lever 108. The cutter-bar and housing 16 are rotatable about the axis of the tube 24 by a pull on the cable 88 which is connected to hydraulically-operated lift-arms 122. By means of bolts passing through slots 140 in a flange 28 the cutter may be retained in any tilted position. A guard 106 protects the driving shaft 40 from entanglement by vegetation.
