Lawn-mowers.-In a motor lawn-mower having an adjustable guiding handle, driving-mechanisms for driving the rotary cutter from the engine and the ground wheels from the cutter shaft both include a wheel held by friction so as to allow of slipping when the resistance is exce,ssive. The mower comprises side frames 1, tie rods 3, and a platform 4 on which is secured a power plant including an engine 7, a carburettor 13, an exhaust and muffler 14, and a tank 15. A shaft 18 is connected by a head and socket to an aligned shaft driven from the crank shaft by spur gearing. For adjustment purposes the outer end of the shaft 18 is provided with an eccentric journal box 21. A sprocket wheel 27, Fig. 5, fits loosely on annular shoulders on discs 23, 26 and between fibre or other friction rings 25 on the discs. The disc 26 is fixed on the shaft 18 and studs 28 on the disc 23 pass through the disc 26 and are surrounded by springs 30 that are adjustable to regulate the pressure between the friction rings and the sprocket wheel 27. A chain 39 connects the sprocket wheel 27 with a sprocket wheel 37, Fig. 7, on the shaft 34 of the rotary cutter. A transversely curved support for the detachable fixed cutter is adjustably fixed to the side frames 1 by bolts 41 and screws 42. The end bearings 47 of the rear supporting-roller 48 are secured by bolts 49. These bearings may help to support a bag or other receptacle for the grass. The hollow cup-shaped ground wheels 57 are removably connected to hubs 53, Fig. 7, mounted on axles 50 above and in front of the cutter shaft 34. They are driven from the shaft 34 by chains engaging sprocket wheels 67 and discs 54, 62 that are connected together by adjustable tension devices comprising screws 71 and springs 73. The discs 54 are rigid with the hubs 53 and the discs 62 with movable sleeves 61 on the hubs. To reduce the friction or disconnect the sprocket wheels 66, the sleeves 61 are movable by means of forked levers 94, Fig. 1, passing through the side frames and connected by rods 93, pivoted levers 91, and rods 90 to cranks on sleeves 80 rotatably mounted on the cross-bar of the tubular handle 78 and provided with hand grips. The axles 50 are connected to the side frames by eccentric shanks 51 which allow of adjustment. The pivoted handle bar 78 is adjustable by means of nuts 84 on a bolt. 83 passing through an arm 82. It carries a lever 86 for controlling the engine.
