Abstract
249,186. Br³ninghaus, A. Dec. 10, 1924. Extracting. - In a process of producing steel directly from ore, ore and fuel are introduced into a bath of molten iron contained in a converter, the blast of which is enriched with oxygen, either finished steel being produced or an intermediate product which may be treated in an open-hearth furnace, the latter especially when phosphoric ores are treated. The converter D is reversed and charged in the usual manner and then erected so that its mouthpiece bears against a pipe C connected to a rotary cylinder B in turn connected to a shaft A. Ore and flux are fed into the shaft A and fed by the cylinder B at a rate which mav be varied by the rotation of the latter into the converter D. Gaseous, liquid or pulverized fuel is forced into the bath and the bath is enriched with oxygen, the waste gases passing up through the cylinder B and reducing the ore, the amount of reduction depending on the speed of rotation of the cylinder.
