Abstract

Ordinarily, access to the head of a bolt is desirable in order to be able to remove the bolt for maintenance or replacement. In the case of holding down bolts for construction of steel building, however, the bolt is cast into a solid block of concrete, and future access to the bolt head is not required. In this situation though, there is a need to be able to move the bolt slightly in order to provide a degree of tolerance for the steel erection operations to take place. The invention is a cap that allows the head of a Holding Down Bolt (HDB) to move freely, even after the HDB has been encased in concrete, by forming a cavity around the head when the concrete is cast, whilst maintaining the structural integrity of the HDB assembly. The cap is intended to improve the method of work of the installation of HDBs, and provide time and cost savings to the user. The cap may clip over a washer which the bolt passes through.

Description

Description
This invention is intended for use within the Building and Civil Engineering sector. Specifically, it will be used along with Holding Down Bolts' (HDB5). These are bolts which are cast into concrete prior to the erection of a steel framed building. The base plate of the steel column fits over a set of bolts, and the column is then secured using steel washers and nuts (see fig 1).
The traditional method of installing the HDBs is as follows: 1. Cast the bolts into the concrete base (see fig 1).
2. The following day, remove the steel nuts, plywood template and bolt cone, and strike the HDB in order to loosen the bolt head from the concrete surrounding it. The concrete has not yet fully hardened. This allows the bolt to move freely, giving a degree of tolerance to the position of the bolt (see fig 2).
3. Place screwed-up newspaper or rags into the empty space around the bolt in order to try and prevent debris from entering the cone space (see fig 3). This is often unsuccessful, since there can be a time lag of several weeks between casting in the HDBs and the commencement of steel erection. During this time, debris will inevitably become trapped in the space left by the cone.
4. When sufficient bolts have been cast to allow the steel frame erection to commence, remove the rags and erect the steel frame, using the cast-in HDB5.
Using the i-Cap, the sequence of operations becomes as follows: 1. Cast the bolts into the concrete base using the i-Caps (see fig 4).
2. The day before steel erection commences, remove the plywood template and cones. The bolts will move freely, allowing the maximum amount of spatial tolerance to the steel erector.
Thus the use of the i-Cap will negate the need to loosen the bolts the day after a concrete pour, and will also prevent debris from entering the cone simply by allowing the plywood template to be left in position until immediately prior to steel erection. The result will be HDB5 that are allowed to move freely within the cone space, which will speed up the steel erection process.
The i-Cap consists of two parts: a cap, and a washer (see fig 5). The cap prevents concrete from reaching the HDB head, and the washer allows the cap to be fitted to the HDB head.
Key features: 1. The cap clips' onto the washer.
2. The washer pulls the cap up, providing a tight seal to prevent concrete from reaching the bolt head.
