Abstract

A very strong, versatile, easy-to-assemble vertical partitioning system comprising a novel design of vertical supports [1] with horizontal slats. The unique feature is the slotted joint mechanism. A horizontal slat [4] is joined to the upright by sliding into the slot mechanism with a double or single rebate [the figure illustrates single rebate, in plan section]. This locks the slat in place and creates an exceptionally strong section of the partition which can be of any length and height. A partitioning system 'post' is constructed by bolting [2] two upright supports together through a spacer [3]. The spacer enables the partition to turn through 90 degrees or to form complex junctions. The spacer can also form a decorative function. The slotted joint enables the ends of the slats to be angle-cut so that the partition fits over uneven ground and up and down hill easily. The partition can be constructed quickly by an untrained person.

Description

DESCRIPTION
Partitions are necessary structures for defining boundaries or to contain items.
High quality panels for a reasonable price are needed by the building industry and for garden design. It is not cost effective to have systems which are as difficult to install as are present partitioning systems. To minimise cost and support DIY, panels should be easy and fast to erect by unskilled workers.
No current partitioning system combines quality and durability, low cost and ease of assembly. By way of example in outdoor fencing partitions, present systems include ranch fencing' or standardised panels of feather or Wayne-edged timber nailed to a frame, often nailed between wooden posts set in the ground. These are weak construction methods. Nails split wood, pull through thin cladding wood, and are prone to rust. Panels are susceptible to vandalism and accidental damage. Panel removal for access is difficult. Wind damage is common for conventional fencing and most panels have a limited life expectancy. The manufacture of conventional panels is laborious, and non-standard partitions requires individual jigrmanufacture. Variations from normal installation [e.g. on hill slopes or uneven ground] are very difficult.
To overcome all the above difficulties, this invention proposes a novel system of versatile partition construction which can be used for indoor or outdoor boundaries and partitions, and for uneven terrain or large areas.
The invention uses upright posts of C section with,horizontal slats. Slats are slotted across the end to enable them to slide into the C section upright. Slats are slotted lengthwise to facilitate forming a solid wall. C section posts are bolted back to back with or without wooden spacers [which do not enter the ground] in the middle of a run and are single at the end of a run.
The upright posts cart be formed of any suitable material such as metal, plastic or wood depending on the forces that will be applied to the structure -for example, outdoor constructions may have to withstand strong winds, whereas indoor constructions do not. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, vertical sections are formed from steel for outdoor constructions and aluminium for indoor constructions.
Similarly, the horizontal slats can be formed of any suitable material depending on the task in hand. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, they are formed from wood for outdoor constructions and wood or plastic for indoor constructions.
The slotting of horizontal slats into the C section facilitates very fast partition construction.
The partition can be solid or ranchrstyle fencing or a mixture of both.
The spacers enable the forming of complex junctions and enable difficult turns in the partition to be constructed.
By cutting slats at an angle on the ends, the partition can be fitted uphill or over uneven terrain. This can be done quickly and simply on site.
Planters can be easily slotted on to the partition to form vertical gardens.
The proposed partition sections are easily removable for access and can be varied in height and length without sacrificing strength.
The constructed partition is strong, wind resistant and vandal resistant.
The invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings.

* Figure 9 shows ranch fencesty1e partitioning made using the new partition construction technique.
* Figure 10 shows construction for an alternative use for the system as an instore display screen.
The partitioning system comprises of C-section channels [1] used as partition posts. These can be used singly at the end of a run of partitioning or bolted together with bookbinder' bolts [2], back-to-back, with or without a spacer [3], as shown in Figs 1 and 2. The partition is constructed from horizontal slats [4]. The slats could be made in standard lengths or cut to size as required. All slots and rebates can be machined in one pass of a multi-head machine. Figs 1 and 2 show a plan view of a partition section.
The ends of the slats [4) fit into the channel [I] by being dropped in from the top of the channel. The ends have a slot worked across them as shown in Figs 1 and 2. Fig. I shows a singlerslotted slat, for use when a flush face is required. The slot [5] locks the partition securely and makes it strong and rigid, thus resisting damage.
The detailed construction is shown in Fig.3. The horizontal slats [4] are locked together using a loose tongue [6], which slides into the horizontal slot [7]. The loose tongue keeps the slats in register along their length.
Horizontal slats could be manufactured as tongue and groove', but a twor slot design with loose tongue gives potential for variations such as the construction of ranch fencing [see Fig. 9]. The height above ground of the first horizontal slat can be set using a clamping device consisting of bolt, washer and nut [8,9,10 J. The nut [10] slides into the channel [1]. The washer [9] is positioned outside the channel [see Fig.3] and bolt [8] is tightened, holding the slat at the required height. A similar clamp may be placed at the top of the partition if required.
Fig. 4 shows how a shelf [11] may be fitted in order to place planters or display items etc. and how a capping piece [12] may be attached. A support bracket [13] is hooked into a slot [14] in the lower edge of the horizontal slat as shown. This slot may be machined at the same time as the looser tongue slot without extra passes of the tooling machinery.
The loose tongue connection is shown at [6].
Fig. 5 shows an example of an angle-cut section, where the horizontal slats have been cut to an angle to set the partition uphill.
Figs 6,7,8 illustrate the use of the partition panels for display, decoration and setting uphill and on uneven ground. Fig. 8 [15] shows the difficult terrain for which the partition is suitable.
The design for a ranch fence-effect partition is shown in Fig. 9. Normal slats [4] run the length of the partition section and every other slat is cut short [16] to support the long slats, forming a ranch-fencing effect. By altering the lengths of[l6], or varying their use, patterns can be created.
Fig. 10 shows another use of the partition system as a free-standing framework, for example, for an in-store display. The slats are cut in a similar way to those for hanging planter shelves on fencing, and joined by the loose4ongue mechanism [6J, but this time with a double rebate, as shown.
Display shelves can then be hung from both sides of the screen. Fig. 10 shows a crosssection through such a screen and an isometric drawing of part of a stand framework [17].

Claims (11)

  1. CLAIMS1. A partition system consisting of C-section upright posts with horizontal slats which are singlet or doubler slotted across the end to enable them to slide into the C-section uprights, making a rigid structure.
  2. 2. A partition system according to claim 1 in which the Cr sectionposts are bolted back-to-back, using a bookbinder' bolt, with or without spacers, in the middle of a run or are used singly at the end of a run.
  3. 3. A partition system according to claims 1 or 2 in which the slats are slotted lengthwise to facilitate forming a solid wall.
  4. 4. A partition system according to claims I or 2 in which an extra slot is added on the lengthwise cut of the horizontal slat to enable shelves to be hung on the structure.
  5. 5. A partition system according to claims 1,2or 3 in which some horizontal slats are cut short to provide a ranch-fencing effect.
  6. 6. A partition system according to thepreceding claims in which the slats are cut angled at the ends to facilitate setting the partition uphill.
  7. 7. A partition system according to the preceding claims in which a locking system is provided below the bottom slats to hold the lowest slats in place, allowing the partition to be constructed over uneven ground.
  8. 8. An indoor or outdoor screen construction system, constructed according to claims 1,2,3, or 4, using double slots in the slats to provide a flush facing.
  9. 9. Apartition system as described in any of the preceding claims for use as garden fencing.
  10. 10. A partition system as described in any of the preceding claims for use as an indoor display unit.
  11. 11. A partition system as described in any of the preceding claims for use as a construction method for building walls.
