Abstract

An electric drive system for a compact utility vehicle (UTV) comprises a battery pack (A, figure 1), controllers 10, two motors (C, E, figure 2) and two final drive assemblies 4, 19. A first motor (C, figure 2) drives the front axle and a second motor (E, figure 2) drives the rear axle. The motors and final drive units are arranged around the battery pack frame 8, 7, 13, 14 central in the vehicle to form an electric drive system which provides an equal weight distribution in the vehicle. The invention eliminates the need for a variable ratio gearbox and a transfer gearbox increasing the efficiency of the vehicle by reducing power losses.

Description

Design and arrangement of drive system for electric utility vehicle The present invention relates to an arrangement for an electric drive system for a compact utility vehicle (UTV).
UTV's are used for a wide variety of applications in agriculture, construction and leisure markets. The vehicles are designed to travel off-road normally featuring 4-wheel drive and require relatively high low speed torque.
This drive system consists of a battery pack (A), motor controllers (10), front drive motor (C), rear drive motor (F) and final drive assemblies (4, 19). The vehicle utilises 2 drive motors and final drive arrangements. One drive for the front axle and the second drive for the rear axle. The motor and final drive units are arranged around the battery pack centrally in the vehicle to form an electric drive system module.
The battery pack frame (8, 7, 13, 14) forms part of the main chassis of the UTV and may be installed either by welding or by bolting the frame to the main chassis.
The front final drive assembly consists of a reduction gear box (4) to reduce motor speed and increase torque delivered to the wheels. The reduction gear box may be formed by either metal spur or helical gears or alternatively a toothed belt and pulley arrangement. The reduction gearbox is then connected to the front differential by a drive shaft (2) which features a double hookes joint to compensate for mis-alignment.
The rear final drive assembly consists of a reduction gearbox (19) to reduce motor speed and increase torque delivered to the wheels. The reduction gear box may be formed by either metal spur or helical gears or alternatively a toothed belt and pulley arrangement. The reduction gearbox is then connected to the rear differential by a drive shaft (11) which includes a flexible coupling to compensate for mis-alignment.
The motor units may be either AC induction or permanent magnet AC motors. The motors are mounted to the battery pack frame on carriers which form an integral part of the frame.
The motor control units and system contactors are mounted centrally on the battery pack frame on their own carrier frame (9, 10) in close proximity to the battery pack and the controlling motor. The motor controller carrier frame is hinged (5) to allow it to be easily moved to allow service of the battery pack.
