A GLAZED DRINKING VESSEL
This invention relates to a glazed drinking vessel.
A number of products exist which have been treated with an anti-bacterial agent. Typically, these products may be pens, door handles and surgical instruments.
The present invention is based upon the realisation that there is an extremely widely used class of products which has not previously been treated with an anti-bacterial agent, and which is such that it is easily able to assist in the spread of bacteria, for example via the growth of bacteria on the products. The class of products in question is well known, as is also the fact that this class of products is able to facilitate the spread of bacteria.
it is an aim of the present invention to obviate or reduce the above mentioned problem.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided a glazed drinking vessel comprising at least one anti-bacterial agent.
0****s The glazed drinking vessel may be provided with a single anti-bacterial agent. Alternatively, the glazed drinking vessel may be provided with more than one anti-bacterial agent, for example in order to combat different types of infection. Generally, any suitable and appropriate anti-bacterial agent may be to.
employed for preventing or hindering the spread of any suitable and appropriate type of infection, for example bacteria-based infections, microbial-based infections and virus-based infections.
Preferably, the anti-bacterial agent is titanium dioxide particles which are coated with silver chloride. Other types of metal oxides may be employed.
Other types of metal chlorides may be employed. Other types of metal halides may be employed.
The glazed drinking vessel may be one in which the anti-bacterial agent is in the glaze, and in which the glaze is a glaze which has been produced at a temperature below that at which the anti-bacterial agent becomes damaged due to heat of the glazing. The temperature may be, for example below 600°C. Preferably the temperature is from 180 -230°C. The glaze may be provided by infrared radiation in an infrared oven, or by convection in a convection oven, or by air with air curing. Any suitable firing or curing may be employed.
Alternatively, the glazed drinking vessel may be one in which the anti-bacterial agent is in a coating applied to an already glazed surface of the glazed drinking vessel. Normally the already glazed surface will be a glaze which has been provided at a temperature above that at which the anti-r bacterial agent becomes damaged due to heat of the glazing. This is because S.....
* the anti-bacterial agent is applied to the already glazed surface, and therefore *.
it does not mailer at which temperature the already glazed surface has been glazed, for example cured. If desired, however, the already glazed surface may be one which has been provided at a temperature below that at which the anti-bacterial agent becomes damaged due to heat of the glazing. If the glazing is provided at a temperature above that at which the anti-bacterial agent becomes damaged due to heat of the glazing, then the temperature may be 800-1000°C.
In all aspects of the invention, the anti-bacterial agent may be in a coating which is resistant to damage when the glazed drinking vessel is washed in a dish washer.
In all aspects of the invention, the anti-bacterial agent may be on the outside only of the glazed drinking vessel. Alternatively, the anti-bacterial agent may be on the outside and the inside of the glazed drinking vessel.
Further, if desired, the anti-bacterial agent may be only on the inside of the glazed drinking vessel.
The glazing may be an epoxy coating. Preferably, the epoxy coating is a thermo-setting epoxy coating. The thermo-setting epoxy coating may be that known as Ceraglaze S1475. The Ceraglaze S1475 coating may cure in 18 -14 minutes at a temperature at 180 -230°C. Alternatively, if desired, the thermo-setting epoxy coating may be that known as Duraglaze. Other glazing materials may be employed.
The glaze may be a clear coating glaze. Alternatively, the glaze may be a coloured glaze, for example to produce the glazed drinking vessel in a * S. *SS * corporate colour of a firm. siSs
The glaze may be applied in any suitable and appropriate manner.
Thus, for example, the glaze may be one which has been applied by spray *..: coating.
S..... * .
The glazed drinking vessel may be one which contains a layer of decoration. The decoration may be provided in any suitable manner, for example using dye sublimation and transfers with the desired decoration.
The anti-bacterial agent may be in the layer of decoration.
Alternatively, the anti-bacterial agent may be on top of the layer of decoration.
The anti-bacterial agent may be provided in other layers as desired, including a layer specifically just for carrying the anti-bacterial agent.
The glazed drinking vessel is preferably a ceramic glazed drinking vessel. A preferred ceramic glazed drinking vessel is a mug. Other ceramic glazed drinking vessels may be employed, for example cups. The glazed drinking vessel may alternatively be a glass glazed drinking vessel. Generally, the drinking vessel may be of any suitable and appropriate design, and of any suitable and appropriate material.
In another non-limiting embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a process for producing a glazed drinking vessel, which process comprises providing the drinking vessel with at least one anti-bacterial agent.
In the process of the present invention, the anti-bacterial agent may be one single anti-bacterial agent, or two or more anti-bacterial agents as
S

S
* ** *** * S Preferably, the anti-bacterial agent is titanium dioxide particles which **S* are coated with silver chloride. As discussed above, other types of anti-bacterial agent may be employed. S...
The process of the present invention may be one in which the anti-* .. 5.5 * bacterial agent is provided in the glaze, and in which the glazing is provided at a temperature below that at which the anti-bacterial agent becomes damaged due to heat of the glazing. The temperature may be, for example, below 600°C. Preferably the temperature is from 180 -230°C. The glazing may be provided by being cured by infrared radiation in an infrared oven, or by convection in a convection oven, or by air in air curing.
Alternatively, if desired, the process may be one in which the coating is applied to an already glazed surface of the glazed drinking vessel. The glazing applied for the already glazed surface of the drinking vessel may be one which has been provided at a temperature of 650 -1300°C.
In all aspects of the process of the invention, the anti-bacterial agent may be one in which the anti-bacterial agent is in a coating which is resistant to damage when the glazed drinking vessels is washed in a dish washer.
In all aspects of the process of the invention, the anti-bacterial agent may be provided on the outside only of the glazed drinking vessel.
Alternatively, the anti-bacterial agent may be provided on the outside and the inside of the glazed drinking vessel. Alternatively, the anti-bacterial agent may be provided on the inside only of the glazed drinking vessel.
In all aspects of the process of the invention, the glazing is preferably an epoxy coating. Preferably the epoxy coating is a thermo selling epoxy * S. Set * coating. The preferred thermo-setting epoxy coatings are those disclosed *St : above.
In all aspects of the process of the invention, the glazing may be a S...

The glazing may be applied by spray coating.
The glazed drinking vessel may contain a layer of a decoration. The anti-bacterial agent may be in the layer of the decoration. Alternatively, the anti-bacterial agent may be on top of the layer of the decoration.
In all aspects of the invention, the glazed drinking vessel may be a ceramic glazed drinking vessel and is preferably a mug. Other types of glazed drinking vessel include glasses and cups. The glazed drinking vessel may alternatively be made from bone china, porcelain or stoneware. Also as mentioned above, the glazed drinking vessel may be of any suitable and appropriate shape, and of any suitable and appropriate material.
Embodiments of the invention wilt now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows part of a first drinking vessel provided with an anti-bacterial agent; and Figure 2 shows part of a second glazed drinking vessel provided with an anti-bacterial agent.
Referring to Figure 1, there is shown part of a drinking vessel 2 having on its outer surface 4 a coating layer 6 containing an anti-bacterial agent. The coating layer 6 is then provided with a decoration layer 8 containing print detail 10. The printing ink used for the decoration layer 8 may also contain an . : anti-bacterial agent. The anti-bacterial agent in the printing ink may be the same as, or different from, the anti-bacterial agent in the coating layer 6. ** S*
Where the two anti-bacterial agents are different, then they may be used to * *.*** prevent the same type of bacteria, or to prevent different types of bacteria.
The glazed drinking vessel 2 is provided with the coating layer 6 during production of the glazed drinking vessel. The anti-bacterial agent is able to be provided in a colour coat in the decoration layer 8, or be provided by sublimation, or by other processes utilised during the formation of the glazed drinking vessel 2. This is because the glazed thinking vessel 2 is provided with a glazing, for example in the outer surface 4 at a temperature from 180 - 220°C, i.e. at a temperature below which the anti-bacterial agent in the coating layer 6 andfor in the decoration layer 8 will become damaged due to the heat of curing of the glazing.
Referring now to Figure 2, there is shown part of a glazed drinking vessel 12. An outer surface 14 of the glazed drinking vessel 12 is provided with a decoration layer 16 containing print detail 18. A clear coating layer 20 is provided on top of the decoration layer 16. The clear coating layer 20 contains an anti-bacterial agent. The glazed drinking vessel 12 is able to be post-treated with the coating layer 20. Thus the glazed drinking vessel 12 is able to be pre-decorated and kiln-fired, for example at a temperature of 650 -1300°C.
Advantageously, the glazed drinking vessels 2, 12 are such that their various coating are resistant to damage when the glazed drinking vessels 2, *:m3 12 are washed in a dish washer. A preferred anti-bacterial agent used in the glazed drinking vessels 2, 12 is titanium dioxide particles which are coated with silver chloride. Other anti-bacterial agents may be employed. Generally, one or more anti-bacterial agents may be employed to give better management of the control of infections. The anti-bacterial agent may operate to starve the bacteria of nutrients that they would require to thrive and proliferate. The anti-bacterial agent or agents used in the present invention may be effective against one or more of C. Difficile, MRSA, Iisteria monocystogenes salmonella, enteriditis, escherichia coli, bacillus cereus, aspergillus niger, pseudomonas aeruginosa, klebsiella pneumonia, saccaryces cerevisiae and enecillium purpurogenum.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the glazed drinking vessels 2, 12 are glazed drinking mugs. Other types of glazed drinking vessels may be employed including cups and glasses. The glaze for the glazed drinking vessels may be applied by spray coating or any other suitable and appropriate means. The term "anti bacterial agent" is to be understood in its widest sense as meaning any agent that it effective in the management or prevention of infections, examples of which infections are given above. Individual components shown in the drawings are not limited to use in their drawings and they may be used in other drawings and in all aspects of the invention. *ns*. * *
