Abstract

A gas storage container 1, such as a gas bottle, gas canister or cylinder, intended primarily for storage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, is translucent so that the contents 4 are visible and is adapted with appropriate valves 7,8,9 so that it may be refilled by a user in a safe manner without the use of special equipment. Carrying means 2 which allows viewing of the container 1 via an aperture or window 3 may be provided, and a scale 12 may be provided on the container 1 such that the amount of LPG 4 remaining is apparent. There may be inlet 7 and outlet 9 connectors with one-way valves, and adapters may be provided to allow for connection to different appliances. The container 1 may comprise a pressure gauge 10 or regulator.

Description

REFILLABLE GAS CYLINDER
The present invention relates to gas storage containers also known as cylinders or bottles in particular those containers intended for storage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas. The invention provides a suitable container which is adapted so that it may be refilled by a user in a safe manner without the use of special equipment.
Butane and propane gas, otherwise known as Liquefied Petroleum Gas or LPG have become very popular fuels. This is mainly because of the relatively high energy output relative to their mass, coupled with the fact that they also are a very clean combustion fuel.
LPG is stored in bulk as a liquid in tanks and also in portable containers also known as bottles or cylinders. Because the boiling point of LPG is typically lower than the average ambient temperature, the liquid LPG continuously gives off a vapour under pressure which we know as Butane or Propane Gas. The storage containers can be of simple design and manufacture because at normal ambient temperatures the gas pressure is quite modest.
Nevertheless LPG has an extremely high coefficient of expansion and the fuel/gas mixture in any container or cylinder can expand considerably particularly if the storage temperature rises and this can produce extremely high pressures within the storage cylinder which are much higher than the normal expansion pressure of the gas itself. This expansion of the fluid could easily rupture the cylinder with the obvious disastrous result.
To prevent this problem of expansion pressure build up, the cylinder is never fully filled and a void is left at the top of the cylinder which is known as a "head space". This space is calculated to accommodate the maximum thermal expansion of the LPG.
In view of the above it can be seen that the filling of LPG storage cylinders has to be very carefully managed in order to prevent the LPG level in the cylinder extending into the "Head Space". For this reason LPG gas suppliers do not usually supply the necessary equipment for a user to refill cylinders from a larger storage tank.
Many different methods have been used in order to ensure that the right amount of LPG is transferred into a cylinder when refilling.
One common method is to weigh the cylinder and to turn off the fill valve when the correct weight for that particular capacity of cylinder is reached. However this requires the operator to know the required weight of the fully filled cylinder in advance. This method can also be used in conjunction with an overflow tube to take off any excess liquid though this needs special provision in the valve arrangement. These procedures are common knowledge in the trade and very little art will be found in the patent database regarding these methods.
It is also common to have some form of pressure reading device attached to the filling valve however because pressure is related to the ambient temperature this is not always successful. Such an arrangement can be found in Another method is to use a float arrangement which controls a shut off valve when the level of the LPG reaches a critical point. There many variations on this theme to be found in the art and typically art can be found in U56178994, US6109314, US6138709 and US5282496.
Most of these solutions are difficult, unreliable or expensive, some requiring special equipment to be inserted into the gas cylinder.
It is an object of the present invention to address these issues by providing a gas cylinder which can be refilled in a safe manner without the use of special equipment. This is achieved by provision of a translucent composite cylinder in a holder which has viewing windows allowing the liquid level to be easily seen, coupled to a two way valve arrangement which allows a standard fill nozzle to be attached to the cylinder in a safe manner.
In this specification the words "container", "cyiinder" and "bottle" are one and the same and have the same meaning and are all intended to describe portable storage means for Gas and br LPG. The letters LPG in this specification means Liquefied Petroleum Gas and includes both Propane and Butane. The word "Tank" is intended to mean a bulk storage means which is not portable.
According to a first feature of the invention there is provided a Gas container manufactured from any suitable translucent material so that the user may see the actual level of LPG through the wall of the container. The container may be housed in suitable carrying means which provides for visibility of the container which is within the carrying means. A visible scale may also be provided so that the user may see when the level of liquid in the container reaches 80% of the capacity of the container. The said scale may also be used to see the actual level of liquid remaining in the container so as to act as a capacity gauge.
According to a second feature of the invention there is provided a Gas container according to the first feature which has an inlet adaptor intended for receiving a filling nozzle.
According to a third feature of the invention there is provided a Gas container according to the first feature which has an outlet to which in use any suitable means for receiving gas may be attached.
According to a fourth feature of the invention there is provided a Gas container according to any previous feature in which the inlet or the outlet or both are equipped with means to achieve one way flow arrangements.
According to a fifth feature of the invention there is provided a Gas container according to any previous feature with a valve which can be set in any one of three positions. This valve is connected to the inlet and the outlet of the cylinder. In a preferred embodiment this valve can be switched manually but in other embodiments it may also be automatic. This valve in use can move or be moved to open a connection between the inlet adaptor and the cylinder and when so set will prevent the outlet from being connected to the cylinder. The valve will also allow a connection between the outlet and the cylinder, either manually or automatically and when it is so set, the connection between the inlet adaptor and the cylinder is closed. Or it can be set in a third position which is off so that no gas flows.
According to a sixth feature of the invention there is provided a Gas container according to any previous feature which may be equipped with different outlet adaptors to suit different applications. A least three adaptors will be provided, one being a tap regulated valve, a second being a straight outlet with an on off control which may also be a type of tap and a third being a valve which automatically cuts off the gas supply when the outlet receiving means is disconnected.
According to a seventh feature of the invention there is provided a Gas container according to any previous feature which is equipped with a pressure gauge and or a regulator.
According to an eighth feature of the invention there is provided a Gas container according to the accompanying drawing titled figure 1.
The invention will now be more particularly described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is shown which illustrates the composite cylinder within a suitable enclosure with visible level means and the valve arrangements on top of the cylinder can also be seen.
Referring now to the figure 1, a composite container 1, is housed inside a suitable enclosure 2, this enclosure is provided with an aperture 3, through which the level 4, of the liquid within the cylinder may be seen. Within this enclosure the container is cylindrical with a rounded top and bottom and is usually seamless in order to avoid structural weaknesses. The enclosure provides for easy handling in the form of lifting handles for the container and it also provides a mounting platform 6, for connections and controls.
On top of the enclosure 2 and on the mounting platform 6, the connections and controls are mounted.
A valve 8 is provided with a manual control knob 11, which may be set in a first, second or a third position. This manual control knob when set in a first direction, connects the inlet 7 to the cylinder for filling and a non return valve may also be included here. When set in a second direction the cylinder is connected to the outlet 9. Outlet 9 is equipped with a manual valve and there may also be a none return valve incorporated. When set in a third direction all flow is stopped, this being an off position.
Pressure regulation is usually provided by the equipment to be connected though it may be incorporated in the invention in some embodiments.
The invention is not restricted to any particular size of container nor any particular outlet valve and tap arrangement.
In this example level marks 12 show the quarter full and three quarters full points and also level mark 13 shows the full point. In other embodiments there may be different forms of visible indication.
A pressure gauge 10, is shown in this embodiment as a preferred element but in other embodiments there is no gauge.
The invention is not restricted in scope to the example given and is intended to be restricted only by the accompanying claims.
