Abstract

A knife comprises a flat hinged panel to which a blade A is attached. The panel is folded to form a handle. The knife has matching bosses C and holes G that clip together to prevent the handle formed by the panel from coming undone. At least one lip may protrude over the blade when the knife is the closed position to prevent inadvertent opening. Preferably the blade is attached to the panel by ultrasonic welding. Also disclosed is a blade longer than 50mm and less than 1mm thickness.

Description

FOLDING POCKET KNIFE
FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention refers to a flat (planar), folding knife and method of manufacture thereof.
PRIOR ART
Many pocket knives or penknives are known which share a common form of construction where the blade is hinged at one end of it's handle and folds into that handle to enable the knife to be carried in the pocket and prevent accidental use of the blade when stored elsewhere.
The primary aim of this invention is to provide an alternative method of folding the knife blade for ease of carrying and safety.
This invention adds to and improves on the prior art invention of lain Sinclair, (UK Patent GB 2360478 B).
THE INVENTION
A panel the size of a credit card and 2 mm thick for example is moulded, machined or cast to create three hinges (see Fig. 5, (I)).
Plastic injection moulding in Polypropylene (PP), for example, is a preferred method of constructing the panel as it enables the hinges to be formed by the moulding process at low cost with hinges that may be flexed many times without work hardening which is characteristic of certain plastics including PP. The hinged panel provides a handle for the knife when the hinges are flexed allowing the hinged sections of the panel to be wrapped around the blade (see fig.1).
A blade (A) made from steel or other material suitable for being sharpened to form a cutting edge is attached to the plastic panel at it's blunt end and is located by three bosses (fig. 4, (H)).
The blade may be further fastened by adding glue, ultrasonic welding (commonly known as staking), rivets or other suitable method. The preferred method in this example is staking allowing the plastic bosses to flow into chamfered holes in the blade (A).
A further boss (E) helps lock the blade in the open and closed positions (fig. 2 & 4) and a lip (fig. 2 & 4, (F)) which the blade clips under provides additional safety, preventing the blade from coming out accidentally from the closed position.
Five smaller bosses (fig. 1 & 4, (C)) help keep the handle secured around the blade when in the open position (fig. 1) by fitting tightly into holes (fig. 4, (G)).
To open the knife: from the closed position (fig. 4), fold the blade outwards away from the panel through 180 degrees, then wrap the two hinged sides of the panel around the blade to form the knife handle.
The advantages of this device are as follows: 1) The knife in open and folded position is very lightweight and thin.
2) The folding method is ingenious and a conversation piece.
3) When in closed position there is a larger surface area for custom printing, advertising for example.
4) The thin blade enables a very sharp edge.

Claims (8)

  1. CLAIMS1) A flat (planar) hinged panel to which a blade is attached which when folded in a sequence form a knife blade and handle assembly.
  2. 2) A foldable flat assembly as in claim (1) which can be printed upon.
  3. 3) A foldable flat assembly as in claim (1) with matching bosses and holes which when folded around the blade tang clip together to prevent the handle formed by the panel sides from coming undone.
  4. 4) A foldable panel assembly as in claim (1) with bosses to enable location and attachment of a blade.
  5. 5) A folded panel assembly as in claim (1) with bosses to prevent the blade from inadvertent movement.
  6. 6) A folded panel assembly as in claim (1) with a lip or lips protruding over the blade when in closed position to prevent inadvertent opening.
  7. 7) A flat (planar) hinged panel as in claim (1) to which a blade is attached by means of ultrasonic welding (staking).
  8. 8) A blade longer than 50mm and below 1mm thickness.
