Abstract

A safety catch B for a planar knife comprises a disc with a section removed to resemble a solid C. The disc may be secured to the knife handle by adding a spigot, and preferably also a rivet, and may be grooved, textured or coated for added grip. The catch may be rotated between an engaged position (figure 1), in which it overlaps the blade A, and a disengaged position (figure 2) in which the blade can be opened.

Description

FOLDING POCKET KNIFE -SAFETY CATCH
FIELD OF INVENTION
This invention refers to a safety catch for use on a flat (planar), folding pocket knife as described in UK Patent Application 1014473.1
PRIOR ART
Patent Application No. 1014473.ldescribes a flat (planar) folding pocket knife incorporating a lip (fig. 2 & 4 (F) which the blade of the knife clips under to prevent the blade from coming open accidentally from the closed position.
The primary aim of this invention is to improve on the said safety catch.
This invention adds to and improves on Ihe prior art invention of lain Sinclair, UK Patent GB 2360478 B and lain Sinclair, UK Patent Application 1014473.1.
THE INVENTION
The soft plastic safety catch lip described in UK Patent Application 1014473.1 (fig. 2 & 4, F) is susceptible to damage by wear from the steel blade being pushed against it when dosing. The following describes a method of overcoming this problem.
A disc with a spigot of smaller diameter in it's centre, forming a T section resembling a drawing pin with one edge removed (hg. 1 & 2, B) is made from plastic (probably injection moulded), metal or other suitable material. The T section disc rests in a recess in the panel which torn's the knife handle (fig. 1 8 2, D). When the disc is rotated to enable it's top section to cover the blade tip (fig. 1, B) the blade beneath it is prevented from being lifted from the blade's recess thus creating a safety catch. When the disc is lurther rotated, the section no longer covers the blade (fig. 2, B) and the blade is tree to be lifted out. (The way the blade lifts out is described in Pat. App. 1014473).
A contrasting colour can be added to show in the recess at (fIg. 1, E) to provide extra indication of safety catch being engaged.
The top of the disc can be grooved, textured or coated to provide better grip when turned between thumb and forefinger which is the preferred method of operating.
The spigot of the T section may snap fit into the knife handle panel or another rivet can be added to fit inside or over the I section resembling a cutlers rivet. Or the disc with part of irs side removed can snap fit into the knife handle without the need for a spigot or further rivet.
The advantages of this device are as follows: 1) The blade does not damage the safety catch when opening or closing the knife.
2) The safety catch ensures the blade cannot open accidentally when in the closed mode.
3) The safety catch is flush with the surface of the knife handle.
4) The safety catch can be seen to be in either engaged or disengaged mode.
