Abstract
A method of formulating and using praziquantel in a suspendable powder for the immersion treatment of fish in ponds or tanks for external parasites. A suspendable powder is also claimed comprising a combination of praziquantel as the active ingredient with an inert powder, surfactant or surfactants and dispersing agent or agents. The inert powder may be silicon dioxide. The surfactant may be sodium lauryl sulfate and the dispersing agent may be sodium naphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde condensate.
Description
Description Title
A method of formulating praziquantel to make it suitable as an immersion treatment for fish parasites
Background
Ornamental fish can suffer from a range of diseases including external and internal parasites.
Treatment of ornamental fish in ponds or tanks can present a range of challenges since they often cannot be handled and treated individually, administering medications in the feed is difficult since they may vary in appetite, and in general fish which are feeling ill do not eat as well as healthy fish, despite being the ones who need the treatment. Also mixing the medication with the fish feed can present its own problems since the challenge is to make the medication stick to the feed and not wash off into the pond or tank water before the food is consumed. The other problem here is that there is no guarantee with the oral route that fish will consume a therapeutic dose of the medicine which could in time lead to the parasites developing resistance to the product.
Treatment of disease problems by immersing the fish in the medicine can be a better way of treating them, but there are a number of problems associated with this method -the medicinal product most be efficacious, readily soluble and disperse rapidly through the water, it must be safe for the fish and other pondlife, and it must not have an adverse effect on the biofllters which are an essential part of the running of a pond or tank system. Otherwise it has to be dissolved in solvents which may themselves present health risks both to the fish and to the humans working with them.
Statement of invention
Praziquantel, although an effective treatment for fish parasites, is only slightly soluble in water, and this invention is a method of formulating praziquantel in a suspendable powder which allows it to dissolve at the treatment dose by evenly dispersing it throughout the pond or tank water.
Advantages The advantage of this method of formulating praziquantel is that all the fish in a pond or tank can be easily treated with a scientifically proven therapeutic, without having to dissolve it in solvents first, or trying to incorporate it into feed and getting the fish to consume a therapeutic dose. The other advantage is that the finished product is stable, and so can be stored for extended periods, and is in a presentation which is easy to use straight from the packet.
