Systems depending on static transformers. - Dangerorus or inconvenient disturbances in feeder voltage, consequent upon the switching in or out of a transformer or auto-transformer used for boosting, are avoided by shunting the primary 'by an impedance element during the switching operation. This may be supplemented by shortcircuiting the primary or secondary windings and, 'in addition, an impedance element may be used in series with the primary windings. In an arrangement employing all a short-circuit upon a resistance shunting the primary is re- - moved simultaneously with the connection of the primary with the mains through a resistance; the series resistance is then short-circuited and the shunt resistance open-circuited. These operations are reversed upon switching out. They are automatically controlled by a voltage solenoid in shunt with the feeder which controls electromagnetic switches interlocked with each other. Various arrangements are described. The impedance elements may be inductive or non-inductive or they may be reactances. The system is applicable to single-phase, two and three wire, circuits and to polyphase, three or four wire, circuits. The boosting transformers may be indirectly energized through permanently connected transformers. The Provisional Specification also describes an arrangement for an autotransformer involving automatic switches which first remove a short-circuit on the secondary and then short-circuit a resistance in series with the primary to bring the transformer into operation.
