Abstract
A blank of stiff but foldable sheet material, e.g corrugated board material 1, for forming a packaging carton has a hole intended to allow the contents of the carton, e.g. fish packed in ice, to drain. A rigid eyelet 2 extends through the hole and prevents the sheet material at the periphery of the hole from coming into contact with liquid or moisture. The eyelet 2 thus serves to make the carton water proof/ resistant. Also described is a blank (fig 2) of similar material for forming a lid for the carton. The lid blank has a generally rectangular main panel 10 and side panels 12, 14, 16, 18 joined to the main panel 10 at fold lines. An opposed pair of fold lines are curved concavely as viewed from the main panel (10). Thus when the lid blank is assembled it forms a concavely shaped lid. It is intended that when packaging cartons having drain holes and provided with concave lids are stacked, liquid has a free path to drain out of the stack.
Description
PACKAGING CARTON AND LID
[0001] This invention relates to blanks for forming a packaging carton and a lid and to a packaging carton and a lid formed from the blank.
[0002] Where corrugated board material is used to form a carton for wet material, such as fish packed in ice, the material may be coated with a waterproof layer. It is desirable to keep water away from exposed flutes at the edges of the corrugated board material.
[0003]WO 2004/045971 describes a blank of stiff but foldable sheet material for forming a container, comprising a hole in the stiff yet foldable sheet material and at least one fluid resistant film applied over a periphery of the hole in the stiff yet foldable sheet material such as to allow fluid to flow through the hole without exposing said periphery to the fluid. The present invention provides improvements to such a blank.
[0004] From a first aspect, the present invention provides a blank of stiff but foldable sheet material for forming a packaging carton, comprising a hole in the stiff yet foldable sheet material and a rigid eyelet extending through the hole in the stiff yet foldable sheet material such as to allow fluid to flow through the hole without exposing said periphery to the fluid.
[0005] The eyelet may be of plastics material. It may have a re-entrant flange on either said of the sheet material. One of said flanges may have a larger periphery than the other.
[0006] From a second aspect, the invention provides a packaging carton formed from the blank defined above.
[0007] From a third aspect, the invention provides a blank of stiff but foldable sheet material for forming a lid for a packaging carton, the blank having a generally rectangular main panel and side panels joined to said main panel at fold lines, an opposed pair of said fold lines being curved concavely as viewed from the main pme1.
[0008] Such a blank forms a lid with an elongate depression between the curved fold lines forming a drainage channel.
[0009] The blank may include foldable corner gusset panels connected to adjacent ones of the side panels. It may also have secondary side panels foldable upwardly with respect to the side panels having the curved fold lines. Crease lines between the side panels and the secondary side panels may also be curved.
[0010] The blanks of the invention may be formed from corrugated board material and may be coated with a waterproof coating.
[0011] From a fourth aspect, the invention provides a lid for a container, formed from the blank according to the third aspect.
[0012] Embodiments of the invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: [0013] Figure 1 is a fragmentary schematic sectional view of a blank for a packaging carton according to the invention; and [0014] Figure 2 is a plan of a blank for a lid according to the invention.
[0015]Figure 1 shows a base 1 of a carton formed from corrugated board material and having a circular aperture. A plastics eyelet 2 is inserted through the aperture. The eyelet has interfitting rims which compress the corrugated material and seal the otherwise exposed periphery of the aperture so that water flows through the eyelet and does not enter the flutes of the corrugated material.
[0016] Figure 2 shows a blank for a lid, of double-faced corrugated board material, the flutes running in the direction of the arrow, coated in this example with a waterproof coating.
[0017] The blank includes a generally rectangular top panel 10, long side panels 12, 14, depending from the long sides of the top panel and first end panels 16, 18 depending from the ends of the top panel 10. The fold lines between the top panel and the end panels 16, 18 are curved concavely as viewed from the top panel 10.
[0018]Narrow bridging panels 20, 22 depend from the end panels 16, 18.
Second end panels 24, 26 depend from the bridging panels and third end panels 28, 30 depend from the second end panels. The fold lines between the second end panels 24, 26 and the third end panels 28, 30 are curved convexly as viewed from the second end panels and correspond to the curved fold lines at the ends of the top panel 10.
[0019] Corner gusset panels 32 with diagonal fold lines connect the long side panels 12, 14 to the adjacent first end panels 16, 18.
[0020] To erect a lid from the blank, the long side panels 12, 14 and first end panels 16, 18 are folded downwardly. The corner gusset panels 32 are folded inside the end panels. The second end panels 24, 26 are folded upwardly with the bridging panels 20, 22 enclosing the corner gusset panels 32 and the third end panels 28, 30 are tucked behind the corner gusset panels.
[0021] The erected lid has an elongate depression, caused by the curved fold lines, running centrally along the top panel 10. Cartons having central drainage holes in their bases and closed by lids according to the invention may be stacked. Water flowing through the hole runs along the central depression and is kept away from the flutes of the corrugated board material.
