Abstract
A method of blending valerian oil with other essential oils plus water and a dispersing agent, using a diffuser to provide slow release of the composition properties into the environment for the purpose of helping to relieve stress and its associated symptoms in humans and other mammals. Preferably the composition contains valerian, vetivert, sweet basil and sage oils. The preferred dispersing agent is 3-methyl-3-methoxybutyl acetate (CAS RN 03429-90-9). Preferred diffusers are plug-in and reed diffusers.
Description
IMPROVED DELIVERY AND BLEND OF ESSENTIAL OILS
The present invention relates to a method for delivery of essential oils, to particular blends of essential oils useful in calming animals and humans and to an associated kit.
Essential oils and their use to affect the mind and body of animals and humans are well known. Their effects can be varied greatly by choice of oil or blend of oils used. Essential oils are commonly dispersed within an environment by the use of a burner powered by a candle or tea light to heat the oil or blend of oils. Alternatively the oil or blend of oils can be used in a warm bath or applied topically in a suitable carrier such as massage oil.
These known delivery methods have problems associated with them.
Firstly the direct heating of the oils in a burner powered by a candle or tea light can lead to overheating and damage to the oil or blend of oils which reduces its effectiveness. This method also means that the oil or blend of oils can only be released over a short period of time, for example minutes or hours, and the release is intense for that time.
Secondly it is not always possible to use the traditional methods, for example use of a candle may not be safe in some environments, such as in cars or in the presence of animals or children. Use of essential oils in a bath or through topical application also gives rise to reduced effectiveness as the amount and level of dispersion of the oils is restricted, as is the length of time the oils remain in the environment and accessible to the user. Again this method of application may not be appropriate to animals and children.
Many essential oils are said to calm and de-stress the user but with the rise of stress related problems in animals and also in humans the need for improved blends of essential oils having effectiveness for these problems still requires attention.
Accordingly in a first aspect the present invention provides a composition comprising one or more essential oils, water and a volatising agent.
The composition preferably comprises one or a blend of essential oils in an amount of 8-16% by volume, preferably 10-14%, most preferably 11- 13%, for example 12 % in total. The essential oil may be any essential oil. The blend of essential oils may comprise any essential oils.
In one embodiment the essential oil or at least one in the blend of essential oil is one that has calming and/or de-stressing properties. The essential oil that has calming and/or de-stressing properties may comprise one or more of valerian, vetivert, basil sweet and sage. In one embodiment the essential oil that has calming and/or de-stressing properties is valerian. In one embodiment the essential oil is a blend and comprises two or more of valerian, vetivert, basil sweet and sage. The blend may comprise valerian and vetivert.
The blend may comprise 50-99% by volume valerian, preferably 60-90%, more preferably 70-85%, most preferably 75-85%, for example 80%.
The blend may comprise 1-50% by volume vetivert, preferably 5-40%, more preferably 10-30%, most preferably 15-20%, for example 15% or 20%.
The blend may additionally comprise one or more of basil sweet and sage in amounts of 1-5% by volume each, more preferably 2-4%, most preferably 2-3%, for example 2.5%.
An example blend could comprise 80% by volume valerian, 15% by volume vetivert and 2.5% by volume of each of basil sweet and sage.
The composition preferably comprises water in an amount of 8-16% by volume, preferably 10-14%, most preferably 11-13%, for example 12 %.
The water may be purified water.
The composition preferably comprises a volatising agent in an amount of from 68-84% by volume, preferably 72-80%, more preferably 74-78%,
for example 76%.
The volatising agent may be any suitable volatising agent. The volatising agent may comprise one or more of 3-methoxy-3-methyl-1-butyl acetate (MMB), Diethylene glycol monoethyl ether (Dowanol of Dow Chemicals), an alcohol (for example ethanol), an isoparaffinic fluid, for example isopar (of ExxonMobil Chemicals) or dipropylene glycol (DPG).
In one embodiment the volatising agent is MMB.
The composition may be delivered into the environment by any suitable means.
In one embodiment the composition is delivered into the environment using a dispenser provided with a heating element powered by a power source to heat the composition. Suitable dispensers include those that use power from mains electricity supply or a portable electricity supply, such as a battery, for example through a cigarette lighter apparatus provided in a vehicle, to power a heating element.
Accordingly the invention also provides a method of delivering a composition according to the first aspect of the invention into the environment comprising the steps of contacting the composition with a heating element powered by mains electricity supply or portable electricity supply to heat the composition.
As an alternative the composition may be delivered into the environment through a reed diffuser impregnated with the composition. Reed diffusers are made from materials such as rattan.
Accordingly the invention also provides a method of delivering a composition according to the first aspect of the invention into the environment comprising the steps of impregnating one or more rattan canes with the composition.
In a further embodiment there is provided a kit comprising a composition in accordance with the first embodiment of the invention and a means to deliver the composition into the environment.
The means to deliver the composition into the environment may comprise a dispenser provided with heating element powered by a power source, for example mains electricity or a portable electricity supply, to heat the composition.
The means to deliver the composition may comprise one or more reed diffusers.
The composition may be provided in a form suitable for use with the chosen dispenser. For example in liquid form, ready mixed or in one or more separate containers for mixing prior to use. The composition may alternatively be provided impregnated in or on a suitable carrier material.
The kit may be provided with instructions for use.
According to a second aspect the present invention provides a composition comprising an essential oil blend useful in calming and de-stressing animals and humans comprising valerian and vetivert. The blend may also comprise one or more of basil sweet and sage.
The composition preferably comprises a blend of essential oils in an amount of 8-16% by volume, preferably 10-14%, most preferably 11- 13%, for example 12 % in total.
The composition may also comprise water. The composition preferably comprises water in an amount of 8-16% by volume, preferably 10-14%, most preferably 11-13%, for example 12 %.
The composition may also comprise a volatising agent. The volatising agent may be as described in relation to the first aspect. The composition preferably comprises a volatising agent in an amount of from 68-84% by volume, preferably 72-80%, more preferably 74-78%, for example 76%.
The essential oil blend may comprise 50-99% valerian, preferably 60- 90%, more preferably 70-85%, most preferably 75-85%, for example 80%.
The blend may comprise 1-50% vetivert, preferably 5-40%, more preferably 10-30%, most preferably 15-20%, for example 15% or 20%.
The blend may comprise one or more of basil sweet and sage in amounts of 1-5% each, more preferably 2-4%, most preferably 2-3%, for example 2.5%.
An example blend could comprise 80% by volume valerian, 15% by volume vetivert and 2.5% by volume of each of basil sweet and sage.
The composition of the second aspect of the invention may be delivered into the environment by the means discussed in relation to the first aspect of the invention.
The use of a dispenser that heats the composition and is powered by mains or portable electricity supply addresses the problems associated with more traditional delivery means such as tea light or candle powered burners or topical compositions containing essential oils. The essential oil can be heated more uniformly and more gently to avoid overheating and reduced effectiveness of the essential oil.
Furthermore the essential oils can be released slowly, and if desired constantly, into the environment and this release can be over a prolonged period of time, for example a number of weeks.
The use of naked flames is avoided giving rise to more environments and subjects in relation to which essential oils can be used.
The composition of the first aspect of the invention allows delivery of essential oils using non-traditional delivery methods such as those envisaged here thus achieving the above advantages.
The composition of the second aspect has particular benefits in calming animals and humans, particularly if used with the delivery methods described, in this case unexpected beneficial effects have been seen.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the figures in which: Figure 1 shows an example dispenser for use with a mains electricity supply; Figure 2 shows an example reservoir for insertion into the dispenser; Figure 3 shows a number of reed dispensers; and Figure 4 shows an example dispenser for use with a portable electricity supply.
Examples
All examples used an essential oil blend comprising (% by volume): 80% Valerian 15% Vetivert 2.5% Basil sweet 2.5% Sage The composition itself comprised (% by volume): 12% of the above essential oil blend 12% of purified water 76% of MMB The dispenser used is best shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The composition was placed in the reservoir 10 of a dispenser 20 suitable for use with mains electricity, for example a three pin plug-in dispenser.
A wick 11 passes from the reservoir into a collar provided with a heating element in the dispenser (not shown), powered by mains electricity. The collar gently heats the wick 11 warming the composition and diffusing the essential oils into the environment. Thus naturally convected warmed air carries the potent properties of the essential oils into the surrounding area.
The reservoir 10 of the dispenser 20 holds 25ml of the composition and will last for between four and six weeks when in constant use convecting warm air carrying the oil blend into the surrounding area up to a radius of 20 feet.
Example 1 -RSPCA Leicester The subject was a cat who had licked his fur to the point of baldness for two years due to stress and anxiety. The dispenser described above was used to deliver the composition also described above to the cat's living area and within a few days of the composition being dispensed in this manner into the environment in which the cat lived it had stopped licking its fur and re-growth of fur had begun within days of using the plug in dispenser and composition.
Example 2 -Cat Owner The subject was a fully house trained 8 year old cat who started urinating on its owner's bed every 6 to 10 days. This was diagnosed as an indication of stress and anxiety. The owner tried various changes to the cat's environment and lifestyle including food, medication and sleeping arrangements but to no avail.
The dispenser described above was introduced into the bedroom and was used to deliver the composition also described above. Within 24 hours the cat showed a distinct change in behaviour and became more at ease.
The dispenser and composition was used for 10 weeks and in that time the cat did not urinate on the owner's bed.
The dispenser and composition was then removed and within 48 hours that cat had urinated on the owner's bed, re-installing the dispenser again stopped this behaviour.
The owner also reported her husband was sleeping better after years of poor quality sleep.
Example 3 -Humans suffering from Anxiety The dispenser described above used to deliver the composition also described above was trialled in the bedrooms of 4 adults suffering from anxiety and consequent broken sleep. All reported beneficial effects and improved sleep quality within 2 weeks of using the dispenser and composition.
Example 4 -Child with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) The dispenser described above used to deliver the composition also described above was trialled with a 12 year old boy suffering from mild ADHD. Within a week of using the dispenser and composition, the mother reported he was calmer and sleeping better.
Figure 3 shows a dispenser 30 for use with a portable electricity supply, for example a cigarette lighter in a vehicle. The composition is impregnated into pads 31 that are inserted into the dispenser 30 and contact a heating element that gently warms the composition and diffuses the essential oils into the environment.
Figure 4 shows a number of elongate reed dispensers 40 made of rattan.
The reeds 40 are placed with one of their ends in a container 41 holding the composition 42 of the invention. The composition impregnates into the reeds and diffuses into the environment.
