Abstract

Ornamenting.-A hard skin is formed on the surfaces of articles such as fountain-pen barrels or electric insulation formed of ebonite or other vulcanized-rubber compositions by forcing Japanese lacquer prepared from the juice of the "Rhus vernicifera " into the skin portion of the material. The vulcanized-rubber composition may have added to it a small quantity of Japanese lacquer and ferrous sulphide. Figured surfaces may be obtained by impressing a pattern on the vulcanite, then filling the impression with Japanese lacquer, and heating to 70‹ C. or 80‹ C., when the pressed-in parts recover their initial positions, causing the pattern to appear in relief.
