Description

Flowable-Sealant Cartridge The present invention relates to a flowable-sealant cartridge for DIY and trade use.
Flowable-sealant cartridges are well known. They typically comprise a rigid plastics cylindrical container, closed at one end and with a movable wall at the other end. A nipple is provided at the closed end for the removable attachment of a rigid nozzle.
The cartridge is insertable into a portable handholdable skeleton sealant gun, which comprises a grip, a trigger, and a frame for releasably holding the cartridge. The trigger urges a pressure plate which moves the movable wall of the cartridge, thus forcing sealant to be discharged from the nozzle.
The sealant within the cartridge is a viscous flowable material, and may for example be silicone sealant, acrylic sealant, caulk or grout.
Once the cartridge is empty or substantially empty, it is disposed of and replaced.
The nozzle provided for use with such a cartridge is rigid, thus making it difficult or impossible to feed flowable material around corners and into other hard to reach places, such as behind toilets, taps, and pipework.
The present invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem.
According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a flowable-sealant cartridge comprising a container having a stiff cylindrical side wall, a fixed end wall which is at one end of the cylindrical side wall and which includes a boss having an axial flow bore for fluid communication with an interior of the container, a movable end wall which is slidably movable along an interior surface of the cylindrical side wall, and a nozzle which is engagable with the boss and which includes a flexible portion for selectively angularly adjusting a direction of a sealant discharge outlet of the nozzle.
Preferable and/or optional features of the first aspect of the invention are set forth in claims 2 to 17, inclusive.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a handholdable portable skeleton sealant gun in combination with a flowable-sealant cartridge in accordance with the first aspect of the invention.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a first embodiment of a flexible nozzle for a flowable-sealant cartridge, in accordance with the first aspect of the invention; Figure 2 shows an adapter part of the nozzle being applied to one end of a container of the flowable-sealant cartridge; Figure 3 shows a discharge part of the nozzle being applied to the adapter part; Figure 4 shows the flexible nozzle being angularly adjusted; Figure 5 shows a longitudinal cross-section of the adapter part of the nozzle; and Figure 6 shows a second embodiment of a flexible nozzle for a flowable-sealant cartridge, in accordance with the first aspect of the invention.
Referring firstly to Figures 1 to 5 of the drawings, there is shown a two part nozzle 10 for a container 12 of flowable-sealant cartridge 16. The nozzle 10 comprises an adapter part 18 and a discharge part 20, both preferably being formed of similar plastics material, for example, by moulding.
The adapter part 18 is an elongate, substantially cylindrical, hollow tube having an internal screw-thread 22 at a proximal end 24, an exterior screw-thread 26 at a distal end 28 which is opposite the proximal end 24, and a substantially cylindrical bore 30 having a uniform or substantially uniform lateral cross-section along it longitudinal extent. The adapter bore 30 defines a first sealant flow path.
A flexible portion 32 is integrally formed as one-piece at or adjacent to the screw-thread 26 of the distal end 28. The flexible portion 32 comprises a plurality of consecutive corrugations 34 which extends circumferentially around the adapter part 18 and forms part of the tube and adapter bore walls. Although corrugations are suggested, other means of providing flexibility can be considered, such as utilising a different flexible material at this portion of the nozzle.
A remaining portion 36 of the adapter part 18 which extends from the flexible portion 32 to the proximal end 24 is rigid or substantially rigid and rectilinear.
For preventing or limiting fracturing and/or splitting during screw-threading engagement, a radially outwardly extending continuous flange 38 is provided at the proximal end 24.
The flexible portion 32 thus allows the distal end 28 of the adapter part 18 to be angularly oriented as necessity dictates.
The discharge part 20 of the nozzle 10 is conveniently a known standard sealant discharge nozzle 10 typically supplied with a traditional flowable-sealant cartridge 16.
The discharge part 20 is one-piece and rigid or substantially rigid along its longitudinal extent. It includes a funnel or frusto-conical portion 40 which tapers towards a discharge outlet 42 at the distal end 44, and a remaining portion 46 defines a cylindrical bore. A second sealant flow path is thus provided between the proximal and distal ends 50, 44. The funnel portion 40 of the discharge part 20 at and adjacent to the discharge outlet 42 can be trimmed back by a cutting tool to increase an opening of the discharge outlet 42, again as necessity dictates.
The proximal end 50 of the discharge part 20 includes an internal screw-thread in the bore wall for mating engagement with the exterior screw-thread 26 of the distal end 28 of the adapter part 18.
A flange 54 having an aperture 56 is preferably provided at the proximal end 50. The flange 54 projects radially in substantially only one direction, and is flexible enough to allow folding so that the aperture 56 can be aligned with the bore of the discharge part 20.
In use, the container 12 of the flowable-sealant cartridge 16 has a stiff cylindrical side wall 58 closed at one end with a fixed end cap 60 having a screw-threaded nipple or boss 62 centrally on an exterior surface thereof A movable end wall for closing the other end of the container 12 is slidable along an interior surface of the side wall 58.
The threaded boss 62 is openable to allow discharge of flowable material from the container 12 through an axial flow bore thereof The adapter part 18 of the nozzle 10 is screw-threadably engagable, via the internal screw-thread 22 at the proximal end 24, with the screw-threaded boss 62. The discharge part 20 is similarly screw-threadably engagable, via its internal screw-thread 52 at its proximal end 50, with the screw-thread at the distal end 28 of the adapter part 18. The adapter part 18 thus provides an extended flow path between the boss 62 and the discharge outlet 42. The discharge part 20 can be selectively angularly oriented via the flexible portion 32 of the adapter part 18 by a user to direct the discharge outlet 42 at an angle to a longitudinal extent of the sealant container 12, as shown in Figure 4.
By mounting the flowable-sealant cartridge 16 in a mounting frame of a skeleton sealant gun and operating the trigger, a pressure plate of the gun urges the movable end wall forcing sealant out of the boss 62 and along the extended flow path of the adapted nozzle 10. The angular orientation of the adapter part 18 enables sealant to be discharged from the discharge outlet 42 at positions and locations which have heretofore been difficult or impossible to reach.
To aid attachment of the discharge part 20 with the adapter part 18, a grip 64 preferably comprising a plurality of equi-angularly spaced elongate protrusions, ribs or flanges 66 positioned opposite each other is provided on an exterior surface of the discharge part and adjacent to the proximal end 24. This simplifies removal of the discharge part 20, should the adapter part 18 not be necessary for some jobs.
Referring to Figure 6, a second embodiment of a flowable-sealant nozzle 10 is shown for use with a container 12 of a flowable-sealant cartridge 16. In this case, the adapter part 18 and the discharge part 20 are integrally formed as one-piece to provide a unitary nozzle 10 with the flexible portion 32 partway, and preferably substantially midway, therealong. The remaining portions 36 are rigid or substantially rigid, providing a cylindrical or substantially cylindrical bore from the flexible portion 32 to the proximal end 24, and a cylindrical bore which then tapers as a frusto-cone or funnel to the distal end 44 and the discharge outlet 42 thereat.
It is thus possible to provide a nozzle for flowable sealant, a longitudinal extent of which can be angled to reach awkward places and positions during sealant application.
The nozzle preferably includes an adapter part which has a flexible portion and which can be attached to a container of flowable sealant, and a separate discharge part. The two parts can be connected together and disconnected, as necessity dictates. It is also possible to provide an elongate one-piece nozzle which has a flexible portion partway therealong. The adapter part can be provided independently or together with the discharge part and/or with the container of flowable sealant. Similarly, the one-piece nozzle can be provided independently or together with the discharge part and/or with the container of flowable sealant. The adapter part and/or the one-piece nozzle are thus retro-fittable to existing flowable-sealant cartridges and containers.
The embodiments described above are provided by way of examples only, and various other modifications will be apparent to persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
