Abstract

A motorised bicycle fitted with both an electric and internal combustion engine. Bicycle can be powered by pedaling or with a combination of the electric motor or internal combustion engine. Combustion engine may sit mid frame whilst electric motor is situated in either the front or rear wheel hub. Power from combustion engine may be transferred by a secondary chain to a sprocket mounted on the rear wheel.

Description

Field of Invention
This invention relates to motorised bicycles and more particularly, relates to a motorised bicycle where driving power is provided by pedalling only, combustion engine only, electric motor only, or a combination of pedalling, electric, or engine.
Prior Art
There are numerous prior patents for motorised bicycles that use either pedal and electric power, or pedal and combustion engine power. The drawbacks of these are as follows: Electric Motorised Bicycles Current applications of battery technology commercially available in electric bikes are frequently reported to be inadequate for the everyday commuter with ranges reported being between 10-40 miles dependant on battery technology used/terrain/rider weight.
As battery loses charge, the motor reportedly drags, causing increased resistance for the user to pedal against.
Charging time of battery ranges from 6 -12 hours which is often found to be inconvenient.
This invention overcomes these important issues by providing an auxiliary and alternative power source that can take over the role of the electric motor thus increasing the range of the bicycle and keeping rider effort to a minimum. By also utilising current regenerative braking technology, energy could be converted back to the batteries thereby effectively recharging the batteries whilst the bicycle is also being propelled with little or no effort from the rider.
Should the rider be faced with a particularly steep incline, this invention would boost the pulling power of the bicycle by enabling both wheels to propel the user forwards.
Combustion Engine Motorised Bicycles Petrol is by far the most common fuel used for powering these devices and in recent years caused concern over its impact on the environment as well as the public wishing to avoid the high cost of oil based fuels. Most motorised bicycles utilise 2 stroke engines due to their compactness and high power output. These engines are deemed environmentally unfriendly in the USA and uneconomical when burning petrol releasing high amounts of unburned hydrocarbons through the exhaust.
This invention would serve to cut down fuel consumption, and if a bio fuelled engine used, greatly reduce if not eliminate pollution generated. With the electric motor and engine used in relays, the user would be able extend the range of both propulsion systems as the regenerative brakes recharge the electric motor batteries.
Summary of the invention
It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a motorised bicycle that can be freewheeled, powered by pedals, electric motor or combustion engine.
The two motors would be operated by separate throttles mounted on the handlebars.
The electric motor would be installed in either the front or rear wheel.
The Rear wheel would have a modification that would transfer power from the engine I.e sprocket/tyre roller/belt drive.
Combining these forms of propulsion enables the user to switch to another should one be exhausted.
Other objects, features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent to those skilled in the field from the detailed description. It should be understood however that the detailed description and specific examples, while indicating preferred embodiments of the present invention are given by way of illustration and not limitation. Many changes and modifications within the scope of the present invention may be made without departing from the spirit thereof, and the invention includes all such modifications.
