IMPROVED BUILDING PANEL
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to an improved building panel. Particularly, but not exclusively, the present invention relates to a factory sealed building panel for use in timber frame kits.
Background to the Invention
Timber frame kits are widely used in the construction industry as a quick and effective way of erecting a building such as a house or an apartment block.
Timber frame kits often employ sealed panels which are manufactured in a factory and brought to the building site. Conventional panels generally employ a timber frame covered with front and rear sheets to define a sealed void. This void is filled with an insulating material.
Conventional panels can be extremely cumbersome and generally have to be positioned using a crane. If the panel is not located correctly on the foundation then the dwelling may not, for example, be fully insulated due to the existence of gaps.
Furthermore the dimensional accuracy of conventional panels can sometimes be poor due to warping, for example, which may occur in the lengths of timber which make up the frame. The timber can also provide a thermal bridge for heat to bypass the insulating effect of the insulation material reducing the thermal properties to the finished building.
Summary of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a factory sealed building panel comprising: a closed housing comprising a front surface, a rear surface and an edge, the housing defining an internal void; and an insulating material located within the void; wherein the housing edge comprises at least one I-beam defining a recess.
In one embodiment of the present invention, the provision of lengths of I-beam extending around the housing perimeter improves the dimensional stability of the panel and defines a recess along the edge which permits the panel to be easily located on a foundation such as a profile complimentary to the I-beam recess. I-beams can also be of lower cost than equivalent lengths of solid timber.
Preferably the panel is substantially a cuboid. By cuboid it is meant a shape with six square or rectangular faces, adjacent faces at right angles to each other.
Preferably, the/each I -beam is formed of wood, Wood is a low cost environmentally friendly material suitable for such a structure.
Preferably the/each I-beam comprises first and second lengths of timber connected by a timber web.
Preferably each of the first and second lengths of timber have a square cross section.
Preferably each web is approximately 10mm thick.
Most preferably, each web is 9.5mm thick. A 9.5mm web is sufficiently thick to maintain the structural integrity of the I-beam but is thinner than a conventional panel timber edge, therefore reducing the thermal bridge effect.
Preferably, the housing edge comprises a lower edge, an upper edge, a first side edge and a second side edge.
Preferably, the panel further comprises at least one length of insulating board.
Preferably, at least one first length of insulating board is located in at least one first side edge recess and at least one second length of insulating board is located in a second side edge recess. Providing lengths of insulating board in the side edge recess improves the thermal emissivity of the panel and, if provided on the externally facing edge can provide a smooth edge to the panel.
In one embodiment, the insulating board is located in one of said first or second externally facing side edge recesses, the insulating board arranged proud of the housing edge and adapted to engage the other of said first or second externally facing side edge recesses of an adjacent panel. Such an arrangement facilitates locating and securing adjacent panels together and further improves thermal emissivity of a finished wall.
Preferably, the insulating board is fibreboard.
Preferably the panel has planer outer and inner faces. The outer face is intended to face outwards from the finished structure and the inner face is intended to face inwards into the finished structure.
Preferably the outer and inner faces comprise planer sheets.
Preferably, the outer and inner faces comprise wood.
Alternatively, the outer and inner faces comprise 9mm wallboard.
Preferably the edge extends around the perimeter connecting the outer and inner faces.
Preferably the outer and inner faces are secured to the/each I-beam.
The/each panel may include stiffening devices located at intervals across the panel.
The stiffening devices may link the inner and outer faces.
The stiffening devices may be I-beams. Again using I-beams reduces the thermal bridge effect.
Preferably the insulating material is Rockwool Frametherm.
Alternatively the insulating material is Supaglass or sheep's wool insulation or any suitable material.
Preferably the inner face comprises a vapour barrier.
Preferably the vapour barrier is foil.
Preferably the building panel further comprises at least one elongate strap member attached to the inner face. Straps are provided to permit a void to be formed to provide a space to run services such as cabling or pipe work.
Preferably the/each elongate strap is arranged vertically on the inner face.
Preferably, the/each elongate strap is adapted to receive a sheet of plasterboard.
Preferably the building panel is between 1200mm and 2650mm wide.
The panel may comprise an aperture. An aperture can be used to provide, for example, a window in the finished construction.
The building panel may comprise a lintel.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a foundation plate for use with a building panel of the first aspect, the foundation plate comprising: a body portion defining a profile adapted to engage a complimentary recess defined by an edge of a building panel housing.
Preferably, the foundation plate comprises a first member and a second member.
Preferably, the first member is adapted to be received in the recess and the second member is adapted to butt against the building panel.
Preferably, the first and second members are wood.
Preferably, the first and second members are fixedly attached.
According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided a building system comprising: at least one sealed building panel, comprising: a closed housing comprising a front surface, a rear surface and an edge, the housing defining an internal void; an insulating material located within the void; and a foundation plate having a profile, wherein the housing edge comprises at least one I-beam defining a recess, a portion of the recess adapted to be engaged with the foundation plate profile.
Preferably there is more than one building panel.
Preferably both adjacent panels define a join. The join may be sealed using a sealing device.
Preferably the sealing device is a tape, such as a foil tape.
Preferably the/each building panel is fixed to the foundation plate.
Preferably the/each building panel is fixed to the foundation plate using conventional fixing devices such as screws, nails, or hammer fixings.
It will be understood that features of one aspect may be equally applicable to other aspects and have not been repeated for brevity.
Brief Description of the Drawings
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of part of a building panel according to an embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2 is a section view through part of the building panel of Figure 1 shown in use on a foundation plate; and Figure 3 is a plan view of part of the building panel of Figure 1.
Detailed Description of the Drawings
Reference is made to the figures which show various views of a building panel, generally indicated by reference numeral 10, according to an embodiment of the present invention.
The building panel 10 comprises a housing 12 defining a void 14 and an insulating material in the form of Rockwool 16 located within the void 14. In Figure 3, the void 14 is only shown partially filled with insulation 16 for clarity.
The housing 12 has a peripheral edge 18 in the form of lengths of I-beam defining an internal recess 20a and an external recess 20b. As can be seen from Figure 2, the lower edge external recess 20b is sized to receive a ridge 22 defined by a foundation plate 24. Such an arrangement facilitates the simple location of the building panel 10 on the foundation plate 24 improving the usability of the product. Providing a foundation plate 24 mounted of the foundations 26 also facilitates connection of the building panel 10 to the foundations 26. Once located on the foundation plate 24, it is a simple matter to screw the building panel 10 to the plate 24. The plate 24 is made of an upper wood layer 24a and a lower wood layer 24b, the wood layers 24a, 24b being screwed together. The plate 24 is in turn fixed to the foundation 26 by, for example, chemical bolts.
Referring to Figure 3, the i-beam edges 18 comprise first and second end blocks 28a, 28b joined by a web of timber 30. Utilising a thin web 30 (of about 9.5mm thickness) minimises the thermal bridge effect created by the edge 18.
As can be seen from Figure 3, a plan view, the recesses 20a, 20b also extend up the sides of the building panel 10. The side external recess 20b are provided with lengths of fibreboard insulating board 40, this fibreboard 40 has better insulation properties than solid timber and the 1-beam/fibreboard combination is more thermally efficient and dimensionally stable than a solid length of timber. Furthermore, the provision of the internal recesses 20a permits the insulating material 16 to butt against the web 30, further improving the insulating properties of the peripheral edge 18, Although not shown in the drawings, the external recess 20b also extends along the top edge of the panel 10 permitting a head beam similar to the foundation plate to be fitted.
Still referring to Figure 3, the building panel 10 also incorporates a number of intermediate I-beams 32, one of which being shown. The intermediate I-beams 32 provide additional strength to the panel 10 and provide a location point for sheets of 6mm wallboard 34 to be nailed to the I-beams 32, 18 to form outer and inner faces of the panel 10.
Referring now to Figure 2, the inner surface 38, which is the internal surface of the panel 10, also includes a foil vapour barrier 42 to prevent the ingress of moisture through the panel 10 into the interior of the building 44. The foil vapour barrier is secured to the inner face 38 by staples.
The building panel 10 further comprises 38mm deep vertical straps 46 fixed to the internal surface 38 (figure 3) adapted to receive an internal plasterboard wall 50, The internal surface 38, the straps 46 and the plasterboard 50 define an inner void 54 which permit services such as pipework or electric cables to be provided in a hidden location.
Various modifications and improvements may be made to the above described embodiment without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the building panel 10 could include an internal aperture to house, for
example, a window.
