Abstract

An all in one smoke detector with audible alarm and louvered opening grill opened on activation of the alarm. Powered by mains or battery. Designed to replace an existing loft hatch or to be installed in a suitable location with access to the loft area. Made in a range of sizes to accommodate required opening size of loft hatch. The smoke that has been detected could be redirected to the loft area providing a less smoke filled are for means of escape.

Description

DESCRIPTION
TITLE
Smoke Redirector
BACKGROUND
A smoke detector is a common household item which warns the occupants of smoke or fire within the building. By the time the occupant hears the alarm there is already smoke present. If the occupants are asleep when this occurs the time it takes to respond to the alarm can have allowed a considerable amount of smoke to have gathered in the area. This can hamper any means of escape and can increase the chances of asphyxiation in the attempt. This can further be worsened by the attempt to help other members of the household.
STATEMENT OF INVENTION.
To aid in overcoming this problem this invention proposes to provide a little more time in a less smoke filled environment to make good an escape. By connecting the smoke detection device to not only an audible alarm but also to a louvered grill type opening in the ceiling of the property. I would propose that this opening could be facilitated by the use of a loft hatch. By replacing the loft hatch of the property with this device, the smoke which has been detected, could be redirected to the loft area providing a less smoke filled area for means of escape.
ADVANTAGES
1. By utilising the loft hatch installation of the device is simplified.
2. Generally speaking the loft hatch is located in the upstairs hallway (with the exception of single story buildings) which is usually the first direction of escape from adjoining rooms. N.B. this device would still apply to single story properties.
3. The device would be of simple construction using minimal moving parts making it cost effective.
4. The device could be battery or mains powered.

Claims (6)

  1. CLAIMS1. A louvered grill of plastic or metal construction with a smoke detection device attached.
  2. 2. Relating to claim 1 the smoke detector is attached to an audible alarm.
  3. 3. Relating to claim 2 the smoke detector is also attache to an actuating to open the louvres of the grill.
  4. 4. Relating to claim 3 it would be an all in one device in a range of sizes to accommodate the required loft hatch size.
  5. 5.Relating to claim 4 the device can be battery or mains powered.
  6. 6. Relating to claim 3 the device could also be installed in a suitable location by providing an opening in the ceiling to the loft area.
