Abstract

246,350. Dyson, H. W. C. K., Askham, S. J., and Palin, J. C. March 31, 1925. Piles, driving.-Piles are driven by means of a heavy or secured anchorage carrying a vertical or upwardly inclined tie member or members with pressure exerting means on the tie members which exert continuous or substantially continuous pressure, without impact, on the head of the pile or of a portion thereof of considerable length. The anchoring means may consist of girders let into an existing structure, and the pressure exerting means may be a hydraulic ram or jack, a winch, sheave or pulley blocks, winding gear or other apparatus. The anchorage may consist of beams a, Fig. 2, connected by cross beams a', sunk below the ground and let into existing walls. Vertical beams c constitute tie members secured to the anchorage, and are supported at the upper end by beams d carried by other beams d' let into the existing walls. Carried by the tie members c is a cross-head e which provides an abutment for a hydraulic ram or jack f which exerts pressure on the head of the pile z. The cross-head e is detachably mounted so that it may be lowered as the pile is driven. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the anchorage comprises girders h connected by cross beams h<1> and let into the existing wall b. The free ends of the girders h are loaded with weights h<2> and the top of the tie member i is connected to the base girders h by inclined struts j, and may be further stayed by guy ropes secured to pegs in the ground. In another modification the anchorage consists of a heavily loaded truck l, Fig. 7, carrying weights l<2> and mounted on rollers or wheels l<1>. The tie member consists of vertical beams m braced to the truck by struts n. The tie member carries the cross-head n<1> between which and the head of the pile is located the jack or ram o. In a further modification the anchorage consists of a frame q, Fig. 10, loaded by weights q<1>, and supporting the vertical tie member r which is braced by struts r<1> and supports the cross-head s. The latter carries pulleys s<1> around which passes tackle guided by pulleys s<2> to winches or winding gear t by means of which pressure is applied to the head of the pile. Suitable gauges or indicators, according to the pressure producing means used, may be provided to indicate the resistance of the pile during driving. In underpinning walls by this method, piles are driven on each side of the wall and beams laid across the heads of the piles to support the wall.
