Abstract
A high pressure fuel pump 2 is connected to a plurality of fuel injectors 4 by respective supply pipes 4a which are connected in groups to outlets 8a, 8b of two T-connections 5,6 which are connected to each other by a high-pressure pipe 7. The first T-connection 5 has an inlet 10 for connection to the pump 2. The second T-connection may have a seat 12 housing a pressure sensor and a seat 14 housing a pressure limiting valve. The high-pressure pipe 7 may have a volume of 3-5cc and a weight of 0.5kg. The apparatus is intended to have lower volume, weight and cost than conventional common rails.
Description
Fuel injection apparatus for internal combustion engines The present invention relates to a fuel injection apparatus for internal combustion engines according to the preamble of claim 1.
Conventional internal combustion engines are provided with a fuel injection apparatus which comprises a plurality of injectors and a high pressure conduit, the so called rail, to supply said injectors with high pressure fuel. The rail is connected to the injectors through respective supply pipes.
The drawbacks of such architecture is that this rail, which is made up of iron, has a typical volume comprised in the range from 15 to 20cc and a weight of 2kg, and is quite expensive.
In view of the above, it is an object of the present invention to provide an alternative fuel injection system which has a reduced volume and is less expensive.
This and other objects are achieved according to the present invention by the fuel injection apparatus of claim 1.
Advantageous embodiments are the subject of the dependent claims, whose content is to be understood as integral or integrating part of the present description.
Further characteristics and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description, provided merely by way of a non-limiting example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which figure 1 is a schematic representation of a fuel injection apparatus according to the invention; and figure 2 is a schematic representation in grater detail of the fuel injection apparatus of figure 1.
In figure 1 reference numeral 1 generally indicates a fuel injection apparatus according to the invention, said apparatus 1 being arranged to connect a high pressure pump 2 with a plurality of injectors 4 through respective supply pipes 4a. The high pressure pump 2 is arranged to send fuel at a high pressure through the fuel injector apparatus 1 so as to supply the injectors 4.
In figure 2 the fuel injection apparatus 1 comprises a first T-connection 5 and a second T-connection 6 connected with each other through one high pressure pipe 7.
Each T-connection 5,6 comprises respectively two outlets 8a, 8b for connecting respective supply pipes 4a.
The first T-connection 5 has an inlet 10 arranged to receive the fuel from the pump 2. The second T-connection 6 has a first seat 12 housing a pressure sensor and a second seat 14 housing a pressure limiting valve not shown in figure.
Advantageously, the high pressure pipe 7 has a volume comprised in the range from 3 to 5cc and a weight of 0.5kg. Particularly, the high pressure pipe 7 has an internal diameter of 3mm, an external diameter of 6,35mm and a length of 100mm. Furthermore, said pipe 7 is made up of EN355.
Clearly, the principle of the invention remaining the same, the embodiments and the details of production can be varied considerably from what has been described and illustrated purely by way of non-limiting example, without departing from the scope of protection of the present invention as defined by the attached claims.
