To avoid both long fuel injection lines leading to engine cylinder units remote from the fuel injection pump, and excessive looping of the fuel injection lines which must all be of equal length, there is provided a plurality of three-element and/or four- element fuel injection pumps 5, 6a, 6b, each pump being placed centrally with respect to the group of cylinder units which it supplies. <IMAGE>
